Taio Cruz-s hugely anticipated second album, Rokstarr features the number 1 smash "Break Your Heart" as well his top 3 collaboration with Tinchy Stryder "Take You Back". Special guests on the album include superhot rising US star Ke$ha and Tinchy Stryder. Written, produced and arranged by the multi-talented Cruz the twelve track set also features "Dirty Picture", "I’ll Never Love Again", "Only You", "Feel Again" and the UK Bonus track "The 11th Hour".
With pop still enjoying a purple patch of anti-disposability, initiated to some extent by the rise to prominence of producers like Xenomania and Richard X, there’s never been a better opportunity for London’s Taio Cruz to make his mark. And with his track Break Your Heart doing the business on the singles chart – it debuted at number one – this second album is perfectly timed.
Comprised of 11 original numbers and his Tinchy Stryder hook-up Take Me Back, all of which feature Cruz as at least a co-writer (befitting given his history as a songwriter for Will Young and current calling as a collaborator with the likes of Sugababes, Britney Spears and Cheryl Cole), Rokstarr bounces to a beat that feels fresh and vibrant. Even at its slowest moments – the glitchy RnB of Best Girl, the syrupy I’ll Never Love Again and Forever Love’s Vocoder-smoulder – this collection sounds like tomorrow’s hits, today.
That number one was written for Girl-Aloud-gone-solo Cole, but made its way back to Cruz after drawing a blank from the sometime talent show judge’s management team. And the result is one that’s gone some way to making Cruz into the star he is at present, the track a naggingly infectious, smooth-of-chorus affair with a vocal hook so sharp and barbed it’s a wonder one can think of anything else for a full ten minutes after it’s finished. As far as calling cards go, it’s up there with Sound of the Underground.
Not that Cruz hadn’t enjoyed chart success before now – last year saw Come On Girl make the top five, and its parent LP, Departure, went top 20 – but Rokstarr really marks his arrival as a pop force to be reckoned with, and will see many other artists flock to work with him. Dirty Picture, featuring US singer Ke$ha, is the kind of track Sugababes should be patching up their every difference ever for, and Only You takes the anthemic atmosphere of Take That at their most mother-and-daughter friendly and puts a neat contemporary RnB spin on proceedings.
With such a talent obviously crying out for attention, and rightly receiving it, there’s only really one question to end on: why, oh why, is the title spelled like that? Answers on a virtual postcard, please. --Mike Diver

The twelve tracks in this collection have their sights
on the middle of the dancefloor and this is where they will
find many new friends and feel most at home.
He has learned his lessons well; understanding how to create
just the right balance between beats and melody (and there are
some infectiously big beats here as well as satisfying tunes).
'No Other One' is a good example of his lightness of touch.
(Lose the vocoder and it would have been almost perfect).
The layered staccato yodel-like incidental harmonies are a hoot.
However cliched, 'Forever Love' is destined to be another hot
favorite underneath that great-disco-ball-in-the-sky!
Stonking great slabs of sound to hurl yourself around to wantonly.
(Only if that is your inclination of course !)
The pace doesn't let up too often. 'Best Girl' is just about
as laid-back as things get but it is a somewhat lacklustre song.
'Feel Again' is a much stronger composition which allows Mr Cruz
to show off his not inconsiderable vocal talents.
When he hits those risky top notes he has the ability to
raise a goosebump or two. It is a fine performance.
Highlights would have to include 'Dirty Picture' with its
teasingly risque lyrical subject and a grinding synth motif
worthy of Mr Oizo at his most raucous.
I particularly enjoyed 'Keep Going' for its uplifting killer chorus.
Dance, pop and a soulful voice have come together here
in a persuasively convincing way. It is a feel-good album
and we all need to feel good sometimes don't we?
Keep one eye over your shoulder Ne Yo I'm thinking !
1) Taio is vocoded to within an inch of his life yet again, when I'm sure he can actually sing.
2) We're paying to hear the lead track from Departure "I'll never love again"... AGAIN! What's with that?
And if you have Tinchy Stryder's Catch 22, you're another track down already. So in effect we're only getting 10 tracks here of mixed quality.
That's a shame and a bit tight. Hopefully the next Taio outing is an evolution rather than more of the same.
Go and buy it!!
1) Take Me Back ft. Tinchy Stryder
2) Dirty Picture ft. Ke$ha
3) Break Your Heart
All the songs are amazing but these were the 3 songs that really stood out for me. The lyrics in them were amazing and it's obvious it took Taio a long time to write each of these 3 songs, And his voice was so beautiful singing them. It would be amazing if Taio teamed up with Ne-Yo for his next album because you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between them. I defenetly reccommend Rokstarr to every Taio fan out there because it is well worth the money.
I was a fan anyway so i was pleased to see him bounce back with the song 'break your heart'. Its so catchy, and its also great that new artist Ke$ha features on the album, on the second track. This isnt one to be missed - recommended!
