Roger Guttridge was born at Redhill, Surrey, England, in 1950 but has lived for most of his life in the county of Dorset. He has worked as a journalist since 1969, working for The Western Gazette at Yeovil and then Wimborne from 1970-75 and the Bournemouth Evening Echo from 1975-90, becoming chief reporter in 1983. Since 1990 he has worked as a freelance journalist and author and is well-known for his columns, features and books on Dorset's history and geography. His other speciality is the sport of swimming, on which he regularly writes for Swimming Times magazine, the Daily and Sunday Express and several provincial newspapers.
