The RODE VideoMic Pro is a true shotgun microphone designed for use with camcorders, DSLR cameras and portable audio recorders as a source of primary and reference audio. At the heart of the VideoMic Pro is an all-new 1/2" condenser capsule that provides broadcast-quality audio via a 3.5mm minijack connector (outputting the mono signal to both left and right channels) with an incredibly low self-noise of just 14db. A super-cardioid polar pattern ensures that surrounding audio is minimised, and your recording is focused on the subject in front of the camera. The integrated Rycote Lyre based shock mounting system separates the VideoMic Pro capsule and electronics from its mount, providing isolation from external physical factors that may cause unwanted rumble and vibrations in the microphone. Constructed from a single piece of hard-wearing thermoplastic, the Lyre provides superior acoustic suspension to traditional elastic solutions, and will never wear out, sag or snap. Easily accessible on the rear face of the microphone are the power, filter and level controls. In addition to the microphone's native 40Hz-20kHz response a selectable high-pass filter at 80Hz is available, which will prevent low end noise such as air conditioners and traffic from being recorded. Below these controls are the level settings, which attenuate or boost the recorded level as required. The -10dB level attenuation (or PAD) is ideal for recording loud sound sources, such as live music, motorsport, or interviews where the subject is very close to the camera. The +20dB level boost is designed for use with DSLR cameras, allowing the user to reduce the camera's preamp level (or mic-input level), effectively reducing the amount of noise generated by the camera's comparatively low quality audio circuitry.

Rich Sound, Plus High-Pass Filter
VideoMic Pro captures the authentic sound of your subjects with an extremely broad and rich frequency response of 40 Hz-20 kHz. It also features a switchable high-pass filter at 80 Hz to cut 'mud' and rumble, whilst leaving speech unaffected.
Plays Well With Others
VideoMic Pro features standard camera hot shoe mount, but includes 3/8" thread for convenient boom-pole (or 3/8" tripod head) mounting. Add the VC1 extension cable and the user can get the VideoMic Pro off-camera, closer to the speaking subject for the best possible sound.

Heed the warnings though - if your lens and minijack are on the same side of the phone you almost certainly won't be able to use the windshield (which was as major part of my purchasing decision vs rubbish windshields and weird DSP effects with built-in phone mics).
So, i went on and bought this mic despite the negative reviews here. And i am glad i ignored them!
First of all i am not giving the full 5 stars because of the deceiving description thus some of the negative reviews. The box states clearly that this mic is meant for Apple products ONLY. I don't know if it has to do with the software but definitely has to do with the position on your mic's jack. So yes it is not meant for phones that the camera is next to the mic jack, when it comes to this feature at least , as i don't know (but probably won't matter but..) what can be the problem with other phone's software to use this mic.
When it comes to performance it definitely deserves the whole 5 stars and more. Don't trust someone's hearing ability to decided! Trust your own ears and that is what youtube videos are for. And there is a plethora of reviews for that brand and for the specific mic and they can't ALL be sponsored to support them nor all to be lying nor to be incapable of hearing!
I didn't want to spend a huge amount of money for a mic for everyday vlogging and i hate wires! The price is to be taken seriously here as this is not an amount of money you wouldn't be upset to throw down the drain if not happy so do your research depending on your needs! Amazon's policy with returns and all the reviews and test fields from so many people on youtube about this brand made me give it a go.
At the end of the day i could have tried it and if not happy return it but that is not happening for me with this mic and i am so glad i went the extra money for a well-known brand so i dont have to return anything now to get the well-known brand at the end!
Also be aware that the fuzzy mic cover (for wind) can block the camera if you are using it for video recording...
Was a problem on my Samsung S5, not a problem on my S8 (because the headphones socket is at the bottom of the phone!)
I am not sure if 3 stars is an unfair rating to give but this is due to the quality of the product cable, why was this not checked in the factory? Something wrong with quality control at R0DE? One of the best mic companies in the world...
