Product description

Product Description

The RØDE Lavalier is a discreet lapel microphone that provides broadcast-quality audio when close-miked in almost any scenario. The Lavalier's low self-noise, user friendly Omni-directional polar pattern and minimal appearance make it an ideal solution for film, television, video, theatre, house of worship and anywhere where a high quality microphone needs to be heard but not seen. The microphone capsule is connected via a 1.2m (4') shielded, Kevlar reinforced cable that has been rigorously strain tested up to 10kg to ensure reliable performance. The included mini-furry for high wind protection ensures quality recordings in adverse environments, and the included cable management clips ensure that you are able to minimise the microphone and cable visibility, while providing maximum mobility for the wearer. The supplied anti-trauma water resistant case provides rugged and secure protection for the microphone, cable, clips and included accessories. Knowing that versatility is paramount in any product, RØDE has developed the MiCon connector system which provides seamless integration between the Lavalier and a wide range of wireless systems as well as consoles, cameras and portable recorders. The RØDE Lavalier lapel microphone is designed and made in Australia and is covered by RØDE Microphones' innovative 5 year 'no questions asked' warranty which provides 12 months of complete cover, and an optional replacement microphone during the extended warranty period.

Amazing lapel mic. Note that you will need an adapter to plug it into your equipment - for XLR devices, you'll need this one https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B003ZDX3DA/ref=cm_cr_ryp_prd_ttl_sol_6.

I was looking at getting a really good Lavalier mic to use with a decent field recorder. There are some very nice mics out there like the Tram TR50 and the Countryman B6 but I loved the sound of this and the price seemed reasonable. The Quality is very good in my opinion, having used it for V.O. work and for mainly short films. I always use a shotgun mic too so I guess this is useful for long distance shots (wireless setup), I know it won't beat a decent shotgun mic on its own but when you use it with a shotgun mic it works very well. Also ideal for insurance with your dialogue incase the boom operator makes a mistake while cueing the talent etc. Overall I really like this lav mic, it has a nice quality sound to it. It may be slightly inferior to the Sanken Cos11D but that's harder to get hold of this side of the Atlantic and comes at a greater cost. The clips are decent enough too as are the windshield/furry that comes with it. The RODE in my opinion beats most of the other competition. Thats not to say the others were bad. just this was really good. I think these RODE mics will start appearing in many a sound recordist kit bag. The ability to change the adaptor end is so very very useful. After testing a few pro mics i'd say overall its the best for this price range. But remember not all mics do the same job, other mics might be better in certain situations. Still this is a decent one to own for sure.

Let's start where it matters... This is really a very good lavalier (tie clip) microphone. You use this to record a person talking to camera where you wish to have a discreet (near invisible) microphone. If you are not filming then there might be better alternatives. This microphone needs separate power and I myself use it with the common 48v phantom power (lower voltage power may have slightly different performance). If you are outside and it is windy then you may need to use the windjammer - one of which is included - to prevent turbulent air from affecting your recording.

I personally bought this kit with a separate XLR adapter, an extension cable and a set of 3 spare windjammers. I would also advise at least one spare tie clip although I have not bought mine yet. Of all these extras you must purchase at least an adapter of some kind to get this to work at all; and most people will probably need either an extension cable or separate wireless unit so if I have one criticism it is that this is not ready to work out-of-the-box. You choose the adapter to suit your application and the industry standard XLR worked for me as it fits all my audio recorders. There is an attention to detail here. The very thin cable is reinforced and while I think it will get damaged if pulled too hard (rather easy to do with a mic like this) you know that it is probably one of the more robust options.

What you probably care most about though is the sound quality and this is really good. I have been a professional sound engineer so sound quality obviously matters to me a lot.

Must be used with care as the wire is very thin. I use it in pair with Zoom H1 recorder - zero background noise and great sound quality. Make sure you order Rode MiCon-2 Adaptor 3.5mm Stereo Minijack fitting for be able to plug it in.

This Lavalier mic (or lapel mic) enables high quality sound recording, discreetly and effectively - at a price of course.

In the plastic case are: Microphone with cover, lapel clip, dead cat wind cover and instructions. However, there is a space in the preformed foam in the case for a mini jack that is required to screw into the connector on the cable end before you can use the mic - but there's no jack plug supplied so you'll need to buy that separately (Rode MiCon-2 Adaptor 3.5mm stero minijack fitting) which could set you back an extra £19. It seems a bit cheap not to include this in the case when the cut out is there for it.

Comes in a fancy box with not everything you require to be able to use it...

Fair enough if you could easily buy the required adapters, but walk into a professional music shop or electronic components store and ask them for help? Not a clue.... never seen a connector like it.

Massive waste of time.

Come on RODE, people need to be able to connect their Mic out of the box...

The metal clip also broke from the microphone almost immediately, so build quality is poor. The sound quality was probably excellent, except as I could not secure it well due to the broken clip, I battled with rustle of clothing.

I now have 4 of these mics, sonically I prefer them to the kit Sennheiser EW G3 mics as they have a bit more dynamic range to them. It's just my personal preference. Treat them well and they will give you years of good service.
