Product Description

First time on CD for these 60's albums from Brian Hyland. 'The Joker Went Wild' was a US Top 30 hit single, and later became a big Northern Soul favourite in the UK. Brian is still touring in Oldies shows. Digitally remastered and slipcased, and with new notes.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shows off Brian Hylands talent, but falls short, too. 20 Nov. 2013

I like Brian Hyland. This twin CD pack has a lot of songs I never heard him sing before. Most songs are copies of songs made famous by others. He hops up country classics without taking away the country flavor on Country Meets Folk.He does very well on most. However there are are a couple tunes where it sounds as if he were straining to finish the last note.I believe most people will like the effort he put into them, despite the the short comings mentioned. They are worth the money.

5.0 out of 5 stars Joker Went Wild 25 Aug. 2007
By Kevin L - Published on Amazon.com

I had the Joker Went Wild Album back in the 60's. This is a great CD with the original cuts. There was not a bad song in the bunch and they were every bit as good as I remembered them. The other album was a great bonus. It was interesting hearing Brian Hyland singing Hank Williams songs. It shows how really good he was. If you were a fan of Brian Hyland, this is a must have.

POSITIVE POINTS:

1 These two rare albums of Brian Hyland are making their CD debut in 2007. As of 2015, this set is the only way you can get these albums on CD in one set. There are a few singles within the albums that are rare gems.
2 The sound is wonderfully remastered, as per usual high standards at BGO Records.
3 There is an 8-page booklet, with an informative essay by Malcolm Whitby, plus original album liner notes. The two front album covers are featured on the front sleeve of the booklet, though a little small.

NEGATIVE POINTS:

1 The missing b-sides should have been included as bonus tracks. This will make this set even more valuable. But have no fear, all those missing songs are now available on a new release “The Philips Years And More 1964-1968” (Teensville, 1 CD, 32 songs) just released in November 2015 in UK and December in US.
2 There are no label & number and no chart positions.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

Brian Hyland was born in Woodhaven, Queens, New York, on November 12, 1943. At the age of 16, he scored his first and biggest hit single "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini." The first album “Rockin’ Folk” was recorded in New York using folk musicians on the session. Looking back in hindsight, Brian stated that he now wishes both of his folk albums had been recorded in Nashville, which he feels would have given them a stronger country emphasis. As to “The Joker Went Wild”, this was his third and last album for the Philips label. Under the magic of Snuff Garrett, the resulting chart singles from these sessions are worthy recordings that Hyland can be proud of. They deserved much higher chart placing than they actually obtained, but like so many good songs from that period, they tended to be obscured in the dust storms of change moving throughout the music industry at the time, where radio airtime was allocated to the Beatles, the Rolling Stones and other British artists. Now that those dust storms have long settled, with the re-issue of these two albums, we can see more clearly the full contribution Brian Hyland has made to the American popular music. If you are a Brian Hyland fan, this set with heavenly sound is a Must-Own.
