James Garner is back once again in Season 2 of The Rockford Files, playing the role of Jim Rockford, a private investigator, who gets caught up in situations hed rather not be in. An ex-con pardoned for a crime he didnt commit, Jim is occasionally aided by his Father (aka Rocky), but would rather run away from a fight and spend time fishing than be involved in anything over his head!
The second Rockford Files set begins at the beginning. That's because the double-length pilot ("Backlash of the Hunter") appears as an extra. In this episode, Jim Rockford (James Garner) explains to guest star Lindsay Wagner, "I only handle criminal cases that are closed." The first Rockford file also introduces his errant father, Rocky (Robert Donley, who'll soon be replaced by Noah Beery Jr.), detective buddy Dennis (Joe Santos, The Sopranos), and squirrelly pal Angel (Emmy winner Stuart Margolin) with whom he did time at San Quentin (before being granted a full pardon). Season two highlights include the two-part "Gearjammers," in which Rockford discovers his dad's secret life, "Chicken Little Is a Little Chicken," in which Rockford helps Angel fake his death, and "The Hammer of C Block," with Isaac "Shaft" Hayes as a former cellmate who just can't get his name straighthe thinks it's "Rockfish." (The Oscar-winning Hayes also contributes an original number called "Gandy's Theme.") Even when the episodes are less memorable, Garner's easygoing Oklahoma charm and potent chemistry with his co-stars, including lawyer/ex-girlfriend girlfriend Beth (Gretchen Corbett), makes each one worth watching. Like most Stephen J. Cannell programs (Baretta, 21 Jump Street, etc.), The Rockford Files never had any difficulty attracting famous (and soon-to-be-famous) guests. The second year claims such notables as Linda Evans ("The Farnsworth Stratagem"), Stefanie Powers ("The Real Easy Red Dog"), Blair Brown ("The Girl in the Bay City Boys Club"), Rob Reiner ("The No-Cut Contract"), and Louis Gossett Jr. ("Foul on the First Play'). The only other bonus feature is a short, if informative interview with Cannell, who reveals that the character of Joseph "Rocky" Rockford was modeled after his own father. --Kathleen C. The US Season 1 set included an interview with Garner (not on the UK Season 1 set) that is included with this set, together with the interview with Steven Cannell (also on the US Season 2 set but not the US Season 1 set) as mentioned. Thus you get two interviews as extras with this set.
Several running gags appear regularly - the phone message on the answering machine at the start, clients staggered at the $200 a day fee (plus expenses, all itemised), Dad Rocky trying to get the better of his son over finances, the gun that's always found in the biscuit barrel... If you like Kojak or Starsky and Hutch this is cut from similar cloth and an easy way to pass 50 pleasant minutes
Having watched them in the 70s this collection, with the very first episode (the wrong Rocky!) was a joy to revisit, chuckling under a rug together. Amazing car chases, and prospect of more hilarious, dodgy technology, hoodlums and nail-biting predicaments. The sets, costumes and cars and the acting - all marvellous!
Each episode is worth $200 a day, hahah! but pity he's gone - what a legacy...
The only negative thing I can say is I was unable to buy the 6th and final season as it was only available as a US import which was no good.

Good old Jim in his check sports jacket and gold Pontiac, or is a Camero? Whatever, great 70's tongue in cheek US nostalgiaPublished 2 months ago by Spike
Excellent acting and great stories without graphic and gratuitous violence. Pity there isn't a modern equivalent.Published 4 months ago by M. Banks
Another one for my collection and no complaints with purchase, thanks.Published 6 months ago by Amazon Customer
If you like the wonderful, late James Garner, you'll love him as Jim Rockford. The supporting cast including his Dad Rocky; Dennis; Angel & his lawyer are all terrific.Published 7 months ago by neville stock
