As a longtime fan of Marseille from my Liverpool days I was delighted to see this double disc set appear, now I could listen to one of Liverpool's best rock acts without the snap, crackle and pop of worn out vinyl.
I first came across Marseille at the Sportsman, one of Liverpool's favourite rock venues, when they where promoting their 'Red, White and Slightly Blue' album, an album that died the death due to no promotion and limited release.'The French Way' was the pick of that album, and became a favorite amongst the growing legion of fans.
The band released the second album, simply called 'Marseille' in 1979, and gained tour supports with Judas Priest, Whitesnake, and the like, and indeed local radio in the North West took the band to their harts with heavy rotation for tracks like 'Rock You Tonight, Armed and Ready, and Over And Over' all of which are on this release.
Record copany problems lead to a line up change, and the album 'Touch The Night' which garnered great press, and included top notch tracks such as 'Walkin' On A High Wire, Too Late and Open Fire', again all of which are present on this 2 disc set.
A great reminder to us oldies of what Marseiile werelike, and a good introduction to those too young to be there.

I've just ordered this album. I've been waiting for it on CD for ages. In November 1979 I was at Liverpool Empire theatre for a Whitesnake gig, and had to queue for half an hour for a t-shirt. Whilst I was waiting in the queue I experienced this amazing noise - a total 'wall of sound' from the support band - Marseille. It was truly awesome. I was in row A that night and legged it down to the front for the end of their set. That experience has remained with me into my 40's !!!

Make no mistake, this band live were as loud and energetic as the lot of them. I still have a vinyl album in my record collection which is warped and scratched after it fell out of the record sleeve, so I'm very excited as I wait for the CD to arrive.

Marseille didn't blow Whitesnake off the stage that night, but they came close. Great memories and such a shame they never had major success as a rock band. Buy the album and you won't be dissapointed...they're gonna 'rock ya tonight'...

One of the 'mainstays' of the NWOBHM but rarely referred to and disappeared without trace even then. Possibly as they only ever produced one noteworthy album, their second. This compilation also includes tracks from their first album Red, White and Slightly Blue which is truly awful and needs to be heard to be believed - soft porn rock anyone?. It finishes off with songs from their third album which was a disappointment for those of us waiting for it at the time; consisting of a new line up and a totally bland indistinctive "me-too" sound.

The best - and only tracks worth downloading to your ipod - are the ones from their second album "marseille" which consist 7 tracks from the total 28.

If they ever release MARSEILLE just get it. Forget this compilation.

I always think myself as eclectic. At least one of a kind of any music style, I say.
So, Marseille was my choice for that NWOBHM of middle 80's. They look alike many but really is incomparable. Remains fresh, young, songs with lyrics seemingly jokes. The second CD, more mature, have this touch of progressive rock, and the sound have a special crystal clear quality -but still hard and rough. The CD has a high quality of production, it sounds absolutely perfect. Listen specially 'Rock you tonight','Armed and Ready' and the touching 'Touch the night'. And laugh with 'Percival'
Very impressive. I loved!

HASH(0x964364c8) out of 5 stars Excellent NWOBHM! 6 Nov. 2003

OK kiddies, well where do we start?
This is just the best. Listening to this just reinforces the fact that death metal, grunge, nu-metal is really a big load of garbage and i cannot fathom why anyone listens to it. Marseiile
were in my opinion one of the best NWOBHM outfits, they had it all-a perfect blend of power, melody, rawness, all attributes that are sadly missing in today's tonsil-tearing, 400kmh, cookie monster vocals, violent name so called metal bands.NWOBHM enthusiasts buy or die and all you young upstart metal fans get yourself an education. From one who has been there since the glory days.
Glen F Wilkinson.(true and pure heavy metal will never die).

HASH(0x963e9fd4) out of 5 stars Rock solid NWOBHM anthology 18 Oct. 2008
By Justin G. - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
If you're a fan of the celebrated New Wave of British Heavy Metal (NWOBHM) movement, you have to love what the Castle/Sanctuary label has done to bring the most obscure NWOBHM bands' material back to life. Rock You Tonight - the Marseille Anthology is a perfect example.

I have to confess: I had never heard much of Marseille's music aside from a track on the Lightnin' To the Nations box set. Still, I've yet to be disappointed in a Castle NWOBHM anthology, so I gave Rock You Tonight a try. Marseille is definitely not your typical NWOBHM band. Early on, the band's sound was not too far removed from the boogieing glam rock of T-Rex or the Sweet, and definitely lacked the macho posturing that most NWOBHM adopted. There was definitely some punch to their music though. The style shifts quite a bit on the second disc, which contains the band's 1984 album Touch the Night. Touch the Night was a very polished, heavy hitting melodic rock album similar to Y&T and Pyromania-era Def Leppard. The earlier Marseille material is more fun, and feels more authentic, but you can't help but be impressed by the polished, precision melodic rock of Touch the Night.

The good folks at Sanctuary have painstakingly compiled nearly all of the available Marseille recordings, cleaned up the sound considerably, and provided NWOBHM fans another outstanding 2-disc anthology. It's not a complete anthology (from what I can tell, a track or two is missing from both of the first two albums) but it still provides a detailed overview of the band's history. Like all of the Sanctuary NWOBHM anthologies, it is well worth checking out, whether you're a die hard fan of that scene or you're just interested in checking out an overlooked piece of metal's history.

HASH(0x968d8b20) out of 5 stars Son of the Roadie 2 Dec. 2003
By MR BTP McNULTY - Published on Amazon.com

Well, i probably have one of the most biast opinions towards this CD, seems as how my dad and uncle toured with the band as roadies for the entire life of Marseille. The album is a total must for all heavy metal fans, and i do mean heavy metal fans. Buy this CD today you wont regret it, killer bass lines, master riffs and a kill em' all (no pun intended) attitude made Marseille one of the heaviest bands around in there day.
