Review

"'His irrepressible, self-deprecating sense of humour shines through in every page - in between the hair-raising ice climbs, the snatches of mountaineering history and more personal musings. An enormously amiable and entertaining read'." (The Scotsman)

"'Extreme sport, fear and survival...a real page turner, written with humour, emotion and raw observation'." (Scots Magazine)

"'Reading this book was more fun than climbing Everest!'." (Alan Hinkes)

"'There has never been a book about mountains quite like it...reels off funny anecdotes and one-liners at an electrifying pace'." (Glasgow Herald)

"'They toured the Highlands in search of gigs, girls and booze...a roller coaster that takes you from hard rock to a hard place - and back again'." (Daily Record)

Book Description

There has never been another book like this about mountains . . .

As a veteran hillwalker and mother of a rock band guitarist, I bought this book for my son, thinking I would just have a glance at it. I was hooked immediately, recognising the writer's roots and language, and a great favourite band of mine, the Incredible String Band! I couldn't put it down, but stretched it out to a chapter a day as I was enjoying it so much! If you love the mountains, the music and the Scottish sense of humour, this book may well please you as much as it did me! I have just bought Rock and Roll Busker and will get the "Tourist" thereafter.

Bought this after meeting Graham a few years back, I knew I'd enjoy it but didn't realise how much! Grahams story will make you laugh at parts and also have you worrying about his sanity in others! This isn't your typical mountaineering guide, it is so much better. It would be a challenge to not be motivated after reading these books.. I'm already searching for my nearest and first Munro. An excellent read!

Rock and Roll Mountains, which tells the story of the author's discovery of the pleasures of mountaineering after a life as a musician, is entertaining, exciting and very readable. Indeed, I liked it enough to read Forbes's following books, Rock and Roll Tourist and Rock and Roll Busker, which are also good but without the outdoors content.

You don't need to be a String Band fan or a mountaineering nut to enjoy this book. Fascinating insight into this world, well written and very readable.

This is the funniest book I've read in a long time. Totally sorts out the puffed-up "bearded weirdies". It is equally appealing to climbers, hillwalkers and non-outdoor types in the same way as Bill Brysons Walk In the Woods. Only it's funnier!
The rock and roll tales of excess are great too.
Hugely readable.
