In the last few years, there have been a lot of studies on anti-wrinkle creams, and the two ingredients shown to make a noticeable, significant difference are retinol (vitamin A derivative) and hyaluronic acid (a potent skin hydrator).
ROC used to be the only stable retinol containing face cream on the market, but now we seem to be spoiled for choice. However, I always like to have a tube of ROC when I can afford it, as it's such a nice, smooth cream, and I've had reliable results. The price goes up and down with ROC, so keep an eye on your basket and wait for the perfect moment to buy ;)
ROC retinol night cream is a smooth, light cream, with a slight silky, serum feel when it goes on. It is fragranced, but I find it very pleasant. The tube is a soft plastic that doesnt split. It is not a pump pack, so you can squeeze out every last ml. Being in a squeezy tube, the cream isnt tainted after use, and it doesnt clog up. The lid is big but maybe a bit fiddly to screw on. Squeeze gently, or too much cream might rush out to greet you!
It does indeed appear to work (read on!), but you might have to brace yourself for an initial acne breakout. But it is worth the temporary inconvenience for the long-term gains.
Retinol isn't for everyone. I have (or rather had) adult acne, and have been a spotty person since I turned 15. As an adult, our pimples are different from teenage spots, though one treatment for both is with oral and topical retinoids (Vit A derivative!) So retinol can help with acne, but it can temporarily make it appear worse, because it works by speeding up skin cell turnover, pushing out any blackheads very rapidly. But it will leave you with clearer, smoother skin after a few weeks of consistent use.
You might notice a rash of small pimples after a few days that last for a week or two. Since I was so used to break-outs, this didn't phase me one bit, and I stuck with it. Glad I did.
I have used roc retinol on and off since my late 20s, but have really only started using it consistently for about a year. I started to use it whilst I was carefully losing weight and toning. I was worried weight loss would make me look wrinkly (as this happened to my mother), so I got some ROC and applied it religiously. I'm closer to 40 than I am 30, but people have commented that I look like I'm in my 20s, and I am suddenly being ID'ed for alcohol again. I kid you not! Is there anything more flattering than 'think 25'?
I am the middle child, but much to my little sister's disgust, people have started mistaking me for the youngest sibling.
I use both the day cream with SPF, and the night cream. I started out with just the night cream, and built up to both as the breakouts cleared. Of course, the sun damages skin, and retinol can make you even more liable to burn. So I've started topping up my sun protection with extra SPF creams. I always put hyaluronic serum on first after gently cleansing. Then I apply the ROC and let it soak in whilst I enjoy my morning coffee. I can then apply SPF sunscreen or SPF make-up.
ROC works very nicely under makeup, so long as you give it time to soak in. Hyaluronic acid serum will help speed the absorption up. Out of habit, I apply the ROC with the back of my hands as I'm paranoid about using greasey fingers on my face, and don't want to rub the delicate skin under my eyes. An unexpected perk of this odd habit is my hands now look much younger too!
I'm unsure if ROC works better than other retinol face creams, but I am confident that it certainly does work. But the most noticeable results will be after 6 months to 1 year of consistent use. Quit smoking, use high SPF, avoid tanning, hydrate well, apply your ROC Retinol and get a good 7 hours sleep. You'll be 10 years younger within 12 months.
