Meet the new primary and backup storage solution that's perfect for creative professionals and small businesses with "set it and forget it" storage needs. The safe, expandable Drobo® S offers blazingly fast eSATA, and the best data storage experience ever. In addition to eSATA, Drobo S features enhanced FireWire 800 performance and USB 2.0 connectivity. It is a self-managing, self-healing solution ideal for safely storing large files and rapidly growing data. Built on award-winning BeyondRAIDTM technology with single or dual-drive redundancy, Drobo S protects your data without any user interaction, even in the event of multiple drive failures. It can hold up to five hot-swappable drives, for on-the-fly drive capacity expansion with zero downtime. Up to 5 Drives of Instant Expansion to 10TB and Beyond Grow your storage to meet with your data capacity needs with minimal effort. To add capacity, simply insert a new hard drive or replace your smallest drive with a larger one, even when all five drive bays are full. Unlike traditional RAID systems, the BeyondRAID technology found in Drobo S enables you to mix and match capacities, drive brands, and speeds. This allows for continuous expansion as drive capacities grow and larger drives become available. With Drobo S, expansion is automatic, instantaneous, and access to data is always maintained. Protection from Two Drive Failures Enable the dual-drive redundancy option to protect your data from failure of up to TWO hard drives. It's all done with a single click, and without ever losing access to your data. Running out of space? Switch back to single-drive redundancy. Unlike moving between traditional RAID 5 and RAID 6, there's no need to reformat or migrate data off of Drobo, potentially saving you hours or days. Self-Healing Technology With the self-healing technology now incorporated into Drobo S, your data is safer than ever. Even when sitting idle, the Drobo will continuall

The Drobo S is an excellent solution for those looking for a fast primary drive with excellent capacity and redundancy or a storage/archive drive permitting easy capacity increase.
I use mine via FW800 with a Mac Pro. Absolutely no problems.
If you need network capability then consider the Drobo FS instead as the S doesn't offer ethernet connectivity. It does however have the VERY fast eSATA connection, which would be well worth considering if you plan to use your Drobo as a primary drive.
The single or dual drive redundancy feature is great as is the ability to use HDDs of different sizes to their maximum capacity.
The Drobo S is pricey and probably a bit of overkill for basic home use. However, if you need a single unit to store or work directly from with high levels of redundancy and you don't want to learn all about configuring RAID arrays etc. then the Drobo S is definitely worth the price.
Don't forget to factor in the cost of HDDs. I started with 2 1Tb HDDs (bought separately) and an old 500Gb drive to keep cost down. I can then add drives as and when I need the extra capacity.
Check out the Data Robotics website for more info on the Drobo S and it's sister products, plus a great "capacity" indicator to tell you how much drive space certain HDD combinations will give you.
As I couldn't get the E-Sata connection working, I gave it a go with the Firewire 800 connection The Firewire 800 performance is beyond a joke - it took 11 hours to copy 1.6TB of data. I have 5-year old dual-disk Lacie External FW disks that run rings around the Drobo.
On the plus side, it is easy to set up, the build quality feels solid/professional and the packaging is cute. I'm sure the data-protection aspects of it might make it useful for a backup device. But unless Data Robotics can improve performance by an order of magnitude (note the fact they don't have any benchmarks on their site) then for me, it's a non-starter.
I'm currently using it using USB as my PC doesn't have firewire 800 and I've been waiting for an eSata card to arrive.Read more ›
The setup is a breeze, very slick software and in the last six months of use it has performed faultlessly. I use the TWO disk redundancy (my old buffalo managed to lose two drives in 24hrs).
The ability to use ANY size drives is great and allows you to grow your system.
Before copying sensitive data to the Drobo I tried hot swapping a drive which worked perfectly.
My unit is used with my Apple Mac (Snow Leopard), you can also daisy chain another Firewire 800 drive.
Overall, the unit is superb and I am now in the process of buying a new Drobo SF for my Office
UPDATE - Nov 2010
After having a Drobos S for 6 months I have been delighted with it and have even purchased a Drobo FS for my office network.
However after turning the Drobo S off one day (To relocate the Mac) it refused to startup again! To cut a long story short the unit had failed in some way.
So....I was looking at 5 lovely drives with my data but no working Drobo S. To be honest this isn't the best thing to happen to me on a Saturday morning.
Anyway, first thing Monday morning I was on the phone to Drobo and within 5 minutes they have OFFERED to send me a replacement by courier which would arrive in 2-3 days. I had to give my credit card number in case I didn't return the faulty unit which was fair enough. They did offer me a 10 day exchange instead which required me to return my faulty unit first.Read more ›

Drobo S is just excellent! No problems (even small) with installation. Works great, but a little bit noisy (cooler). Capacity manager on mac is informative, works fine. Read morePublished on 3 Sept. 2010 by Alex Berkley
