I had to laugh at the idea of the hackers jumping from a window of Buckingham Palace into the River Thames. Note to author: check a map when describing "foreign" locations!
The unconnected short stories at the end didn't interest me so much. As mentioned by other reviewers, there was some editing/proof-reading needed, but it was not as bad as some books I've read.
The science and technology used in this series must have taken a great deal of research. Furthermore, the number of locations around the world that were featured, must also have taken a great deal of research.
However, I'm not sure how accurate most locations were, but speaking as a Brit, I found the speech used by the British MI5 character to be completely unrealistic as we don't use "bloody hell" in every sentence, especially when it doesn't make sense. "Bloody well" would make sense of some of the speech used by the Brit in the books.
This was rather annoying, but relatively minor compared to calling the people of Liverpool, "Liverpoolians". Had I been eating or drinking as I read that, I may well have choked, instead of just bursting out laughing! The correct term for a person from Liverpool is, of course, a "Liverpudlian".
If these two issues were the only matters of concern, I would still have gladly awarded 5 stars, but other than the first book in the series, I found the editing/proofreading sadly lacking.
It is a crying shame that an author and work of this high calibre should be let down by minor inconsistencies like Devlin being called Devon several times, then resorting back to Devlin again a page later. I suspect that many of the designer and brand names were intentionally spelled incorrectly, but then occasionally would be spelled correctly, or even incorrectly again, but differently than before!
The minor inconsistencies seemed to increase as the books progressed, as did simple spelling errors, missed words, and mixed word orders, which caused me to have to go back and re-read parts increasingly, so I could follow the storyline.
Nevertheless, I would thoroughly recommend this set of books to anyone who likes to read a good action packed story that isn't over in just two or three hours of reading. It has a bit of everything, really, ranging from computer hacking, James Bond style gadgets, a great deal of shooting/action and even includes heterosexual and homosexual love stories, and yet never does the language get worse than the aforementioned "bloody hell"!
Despite my comments regarding inconsistencies and inaccuracies, I will definitely go ahead and read as many of Ms McCray's books as I can, because if they're anything like this series, they will definitely be worth reading.
I'm just disappointed that the lack of editing/proofreading meant that I didn't feel I could rightfully award the full 5stars that I feel the books would have merited had they been edited/proofread before release.
The main storyline about a couple of "mega hackers" legends in their world, feared and hated by worldwide corporations who acquired their wealth by nefarious methods & who were targetted by the hackers to re -distribute their wealth to the needy. A modern day Robin Hood.
The team cromprised of Ronnie - a long time hacker who could break every code thrown at her and Quirk her scientist sidekick who supplied her with a plethora of amazing sc -fi goodies, ranging from a gun that shot bullets round corners, to a highly magnetised plate that drew all fired bullets (and anything else made of metal including the fridge from the next room) to it, aiding her missions.
The story wouldnt be complete though if it didnt have its love interest & boy Caroline doesnt let us down -in Zach a gorgious sexy hunk and its love at first sight as he watches Ronnie escape from him hanging from the strut of a helicopter - yes hes an FBI agent whos prime mission is to capture her. This of course makes it a tad difficult for them to be together.
Not to be forgotten Quirk too meets the love of his life in the shape of their burley helicopter pilot who prefers to be known as "pilot" and provides unparalleled rescue service when all hope seems lost.
This is all handled brilliantly by Caroline - nearly every page had me laughing my head off.
I was truly amazed by all the science woven into the story in such a way that we are not "blinded" by it but left intregued by the possibilities, they had mind reading machines, guns that shot bullets round corners, Stargate phasers (stun on 1 shot kill on 2) and provided believable explanations as to how they worked.
I cant more highly recommend this series of books. This story is not just for "computer nerds" or "sci fi freaks" it is a light hearted fast paced thriller that has you laughing along as the story unfolds: This book has something for everyone, a Romeo & Juliet constantly thwarted, a scientific genious with relevant 007 stlye goodies, the major disaster that only this team can right, a murky secret society bent on taking over the world, mix in a handful of the worlds worst gangsters & a dash of mad megolamaniacs and you have one of the best reading pleasures ive had and I cant wait for the next chapters in the tale of Ronnie, Zach, Quirk, and Pilot oh and did i forget to mention Waarp ..
Read, be thrilled, frustrated, laugh and thoroughly enjoy
Taking into account that EVERYTHING gets destroyed and the whole world is altered forever, its a very exciting and unbelievable romp!
I recommend you read this series. Had to keep reading all the way through.
