The tape deck on my stereo that I used to record The Archers on at night when I went out was broken and I was looking for a radio with timed recording facilities. I went on line and the Roberts RC 9907 Portable Stereo seemed to fit the bill.I read the reviews from other customers and purchased one and I am extremely pleased with it. It is easy to use and does exactly what I require. I would certainly recommend this radio.

I purchased this item in order to listen to audiotapes in bed- they help me get to sleep...however, a scant 14 months after purchase, the tape player has groaned to a total halt- it is a dead parrot. Since I had the predecessor a considerably longer time than this, I am suitably angry- a total waste of thirty-plus quid.If i thought that it would do me any good, I would try chasing up the company that sold it to me, but somehow I don't think they will want to know. It will be interesting to see if they read their reviews- won't it?
Trudi Gray- purchase made at the end of August 2010.

I bought this item specifically for the timer recording function on the cassette recorder, only to get home several hours after the end of the recording time to discover that the cassette was humming and clicking away to itself because there is NO auto stop facility. How on earth can a manufacturer make such a product? It's such a basic function, it's ALMOST an implied term that it exists. Other than this annoyance, the product is lightweight and I really like the fact that I can tune the radio manually rather than having some awful 'seek' function that never finds what I want.

I bought this as a present for my mother. She wanted a radio with tape recording features, and she'd been looking for one with this facility for some time.
The radio arrived really promptly and she's been full of praise for it ever since. It has good sound quality and does exactly what it says on the tin.

I have been disappointed with the excessive noise made by the cassette drive motor when it is playing. When playing speach tapes the motor noise is too loud.

I often need to record interviews, radio programmes etc in the course of my work and still find good old normal-sized cassettes the most congenial medium to use. I use a small Sony recorder (TCM-450DV) to make recordings, but have missed not having a good tape playback system which is one reason why I got this reasonably priced system. I also fancied being able to set the machine to make timed radio recordings.

On the plus side, it's good to be able to play back tapes and lsten to them as if I were listening to a radio. In addition, I like having a non-digital radio tuned by twirling a dial (sorry to hear on the news this morning that the new British govt is going ahead with plans to phase out FM by 2015). But I have two main criticisms of the system so far:

a) I found setting the clock needlessly tricky, and not very well described in the instruction booklet. The relevant pages of the instruction booklet include a helpline number for queries, and I understand from using this line that some other users have also had problems setting the clock. I have yet to try making a timed recording of a radio programme; have been deterred from doing this by the difficulties over the fiddly clock.

b) although I make recordings with the small Sony recorder set to normal speed, on several occasions the playback feature of the Roberts recorder has speeded the tapes right up to sound like double speed. That happened this morning when I rewound on Roberts a cassette on which I had freshly recorded something on the Sony recorder. However, once I removed the cassette from the Roberts player and reinserted it, the speed was normal.

I bought this item purely to play my old music cassette tapes on. The thing worked for a mere THREE WEEKS before it started chewing up tapes instead of playing them. Ruined a tape with a rare recording which I have not been able to replace. Don't waste your money on this rubbish. I have well and truly learned my lesson. From now on I will only buy Japanese audio appliances.

I ordered the Roberts RC9907 for a blind friend who wanted it to record dialogue and play back. Unfortunately he found the level of motor noise feeding through the built in microphone intrusive, and asked me to send it back. Otherwise the item seemed to perform well. Recording off air was of good quality, and I would recommend this unit to anyone who doesn't need to use the built-in mic, or doesn't mind a degree of motor hum. Speech was perfectly audible.

I should also add that quality of service from KK Electronics was excellent, and they and Amazon were courteous and efficient in processing the return.
