Bought this to replace a an old, battered DAB radio which had poor reception, had to move the ariel and position it just so to get reception. This beauty just worked straight out the box! Put 4 rechargable batteries in, switched on, it automatically searched and found all the stations and WOW - perfect reception, great tone. No need to extend the ariel even to get perfect reception indoors! Batteries seem to be lasting ages, not had to charge it yet. It alos looks really smart, seems solid and well built. Strongly recommended.

OK, so what we have come to expect from a DAB radio is all in this Roberts Play, easy set up, simple to use and clear sound.

I had this radio set up and working within a couple of minutes of opening the box, I miss understood the description and thought this radio came with it's own rechargeable battery, but it doesn't, instead have to you can buy 4 AA type NiMh rechargeables, I would suggest you buy a higher milliamp hour rating for longer running time and are around £8 for four Duracell Pre Charged Rechargeable 2400mAh AA Batteries--Pack of 4 , the radio is supplied with a mains adaptor, so can charge the batteries or just run from the mains without any batteries being inserted . This radio can also run on 4 standard alkaline AA batteries how long they will last I can't tell you. Take note of the small switch inside the battery cover that must be switched to either alkaline or rechargeable batteries depending of which type(if any) are used.

This little radio is perfectly adequate for a kitchen or bedroom and if using in the bathroom I would advise to use it on battery only, the volume of this radio seems a little restricted albeit very clear but if you turn it up to full it distorts horribly, we have a Pure One Mini II in the kitchen and must say the sound from the Pure is so much better, even at full volume. I have listened with headphones (V-Moda 100s) the sound is fairly flat and not entirely thrilling on music.

The LDC display shows all the usual information like track/artist being played/station/time/date/signal strength ETC. it is backlit with a white LED which turn off after 12 secs when being used on battery to save power.

This radio has developed a fault within 2 months of purchase. It is supposedly under a 12 month guarantee, but hours of going round in circles on Amazon's website always leads back to a message saying that the item cannot be returned as it is more than 30 days since purchase. It says to contact the firm who supplied it through Amazon, but it was supplied by "Energy Saving Deals Ltd", and no such independent firm exists. Our next port of call is Trading Standards as Amazon is impossible to contact and legally someone needs to honour the 12 month guarantee.

Update: The power-supply for this radio failed after a little under two years very light use. The radio has been certainly listened to for less than 50 hours and I would estimate about 20 hours total use. I replaced the power-supply with one of these AKORD® Multi Voltage Power Transformer / Adapter DC Volt 3v/4.5v/5v/6v/7.5v/9v/12v 2000ma/2A - 9 Replacable Tips - Micro USB, USB Female, 3.5mm, 2.5mm, 5.5x2.5mm, 5.5x2.1mm, 3.5x1.35mm, 5.5x2.1mm which has solved the problem.
With the mains supply failing, I used the radio with batteries and it works just fine. Also appreciated is the ability to charge my Eneloops in the radio when connected to the power supply. (There's a switch to select between Alkaline and rechargable batteries, so be sure not to set to rechargeable batteries when using alkaline batteries.)

Original review:
This radio is a little smaller than you might expect. I've got a "Pure" DAB radio which I'm very happy with, so when I opened up this little Roberts I expected rather weedy sound output. Not so. It has the familiar Roberts "tone" which was a nice surprise. The limitations of its size become apparent only when you turn up the volume to higher levels. It doesn't have the puff of a larger radio, but by no means does it embarrass itself.

I'm not sure about the inter-changeable rubber surround or the slightly insipid colour, but those are not deal-breakers for me. If it has a fault, it's that it gives the impression of being a little fragile, compared to other radios. That said, that might be due to it being light without batteries, as I'm running off the mains.

When I first opened the box, I wasn't quite sure whether I liked the looks of this radio or not - without any conventional rotary controls and no carry handle, the design seems somewhat clinical - a bit like a large control panel rather than a radio. But I have to say that the look of the radio did grow on me as the weekend went on.

This Roberts radio has a grey rubber bumper (apparently you can choose to buy other different coloured ones to customise the look of the radio - really....) can take either 4 AA alkaline batteries, or a set of rechargeable NiMH batteries - it comes with a mains lead to allow the use of rechargeable batteries inside the radio - there is a small two way switch in the battery compartment of the radio to allow the recharging of batteries to take place. I used a set of standard alkaline batteries to evaluate it.
DAB stations, and in a few moments had found over 30 stations, without the antenna being extended. Selection of stations is by two up/down buttons and a selection button, but operation was quick and easy. The LED display is a backlit 2 line display - standard for DAB radios. - with the tuned-to station listed and scrolling information on the station on the bottom line. The information displayed can be altered. The volume buttons are small - / + buttons the same size as the other buttons on the radio and I found this a bit confusing and often found myself prodding at the wrong buttons to change the volume. There are 5 station presents that can be configured - the presents are the bottom row of buttons on the radio.

Sound quality is good for a radio this size, more bass then I expected but not overwhelming - speech and music both worked well through the small speaker but distorted a little at higher volumes.
