ROBERTS introduces the Expression; a portable DAB / FM stereo radio that makes a style and eco statement. The design of the Expression evokes a wonderful combination of modern meets retro, retaining the stamp of quality synonomous with the brand. With curved ash-effect wooden edges that encase a metal grill both front and back, the radio with carry handle is completely portable and incorporates stereo speakers for high quality sound. The Expression is eco-friendly too, with a built-in battery charger and up to 100 hours of battery life. In keeping with the Expression's deco-inspired appearance, there are two neat rotary tuning and volume controls subtlety incorporated on its top, as well as a favourite station button so youre only ever one touch away from your favourite DJ or show.

Here is a recommendation - wherever you have this, near a socket or not. BUY SOME ANSMANN D SIZE 10000 mAH NiMH HIGH CAPACITY RE-CHARGEABLE BATTERIES. I HAVE HAD THIS RADIO RUNNING, I WOULD SAY MEDIUM USE, FOR 3 MONTHS AND HAVE ONLY CHARGED THE BATTERIES ONCE!!! EXPENSIVE, BUT YOU WILL NOT REGRET THE SPEND...TRULY AMAZING BATTERIES, IDEAL FOR THIS RADIO WHICH HAS A BUILT IN CHARGER.
I bought this to replace an old bathroom radio. First the positives: It's sturdily constructed, reassuringly heavy, and aesthetically pleasing. I live on the Suffolk coast which is not one of the best areas for DAB reception, yet it picks up loads of DAB stations, all with no or minimal interference. And I love that plugging it in recharges its batteries in four to five hours.
But for me there's one big negative - Its sound, which, though not exactly unlistenably terrible, is muffled and muddy, whether for speech or for any genre of music, and not just in the acoustics of my bathroom.
I would have bought a Roberts Ecologic radio, which has a much better sound, and boasts 33% more battery-life than the Expression, except that the one I bought about four years ago suddenly and inexplicably died after about 14 months.
By all means buy the Expression, if you are not too fussy about timbre of sound, though I think that most people will agree with me that it needs at least a basic tone control.
If you do decide to buy this I also strongly recommend investing in the ANSMANN D Size 10000mAh NiMH High Capacity Rechargeable batteries for it. While this is an expensive initial outlay I've found that these batteries perform just as well as standard size D Duracell's which means that you'll never ever need to buy another battery for your lovely new radio ever again (and of course help save the planet by not sending all those non rechargeable batteries to landfill when the become dud)
Update: I returned the Expression and bought a Sony instead. Just what i wanted. Question: What the heck is wrong with the Roberts Expression. I've since noticed other reviewers complaining of the same mushy sound.
This prompted me to buy the Roberts. What an excellent upgrade. A serious and totally excellent product.
The favourite button is a joy. When you switch it on it's perfect, no problem. Sadly this is very expensive and yet it has plastic everywhere -- shame on you Roberts! This though is actually very pleasing on the eye and the dials have a very pleasant rubberised feel to them. So I rate this product as ten out of ten. Well worth the money and it re-charges your ni-cad rechargeables(DANGER you have to switch this off/on so read the instructions!!) This could be a dangerous feature so best that you only put in rechargeables.....?
The SOUND? Great note sounds very natural with a good bass. It won't raise the roof but isn't that why I own an old fashioned Yamaha AMP! There is NO distortion on the speakers so I guess that's where the money goes! FM NOT tested why?
