Product Description

Review

"Remarkably up to date.Provides the reader with a current understanding of disease mechanisms and deserves a place on the shelf of any health care professional, irrespective of specialty or level of training." - JAMA, review of previous edition

"Praiseworthy for the breadth and depth of its content and its ability to remain up to date. It serves the needs not only of the beginning student, the pathologist in training, but all practitioners of medicine with intellectual curiosity." - Modern Pathology, review of previous edition

"Bound to retain its standing as the definitive source for learning, or relearning, the principles of the pathologic basis of disease." - Advances in Anatomic Pathology, review of previous edition

"This book is even shorter than before. That is really impressive. I cannot but admire this book, which I keep re-reading since I entered Pathology in 1966. Wow, it shows that even a first class book can be improved - hard to believe but true. It is very readable and even funny in some places. The text is nicely laid out and the book looks less bulky than the previous edition. The illustrations are excellent. Even though the book is definitely for the new generations, I am sure that it will be welcomed by senior pathologists trying to keep up with the times - I doubt that I am the only old timer eager to re-read it." - Ivan Damjanov, MD, PhD, author of Pathology Secrets and Pathophysiology

I cannot recommend this book. Why? I don't know to whom to recommend it.

(1) Its too big for med students. With pathology becoming less & less central to medical curricula & with the availability of smaller & cheaper books (for example, Robin Reid's Pathology Illustrated, 7e, a personal favourite & a book which I can recommend), a med student has to be out of his mind to read Robbins. The (single) goal of a "non-pathologist's" pathology book should be to provide a simple, useful clinico-pathologic classification of diseases, so when a clinician reads a histopathology report, he can correlate with the clinical/biochemical/radiological features. For example, to an endoscopist, a chronic gastritis is H. pylori-induced while a reactive gastritis is NSAID-induced; to a nephrologist, a proliferative glomerulonephritis is nephritic while a non-proliferative glomerulonephritis is nephrotic; to a haematologist, a small-cell lymphoma is low-grade while a large-cell lymphoma is high-grade, etcetera. Read Robbins & you won't find such a thing.

(2) Its too irrelevant for pathologists. One reviewer compares it to the Bible. How useful is The Bible, in practical terms, in the everyday life of the average Joe? Most pathologists own or have owned Robbins (or there's copy in most pathology departments). Most pathologists, including those who own it, never use it (departmental copies lie on shelfs & gather dust). The reason is the unevenness of depth of topics.

This book is excellent and is essential to any medical student. Forget buying lots of book with vague references and ambiguous statements - you need Medicine and Surgery by Lim et al and this book.

I recommend this textbook to all my students on undergraduate and postgraduate biomedical science degrees. It is essentially split into two parts; the first covers basic pathology but in great depth and the second part covers systemic pathology. It is profusely illustrated with clear diagrams and excellent pictures and every concept is clearly explained and is as up to date as a book of this style can be. This is a must have book if you studying any area of pathology. It is definitely biased towards histopathology but will still give you an excellent grounding in all diagnostic laboratory disciplines.

I was told by my medical school that from the second year this is our core textbook and I can see why. It is detailed, accurate but understandable textbook. The diagrams often come in handy. Some places it retailed for £70 so I was glad to get it for less but in new condition.

I came across this book when I was preparing for my third year exam and I said to myself "This can be helpful for my pathology revision." Hence, I requested to review the book. Few days later, a whooping hardcover-1450-page-book arrived at my door step. Before I go any further, rest assured that this book available under student consult, so incase you need to travel and need to study pathology, you don't need to carry the heavy book with you. As geeky as it sounds, I enjoyed reading the book, it is thorough , detailed and full of pictures, which is great for pathology. It is also up to date (from what I have perceived) with its information. It has become one of my top sources to consult when I need to research a disease, whether it is for pathology or clinical purposes, it aided my understanding in what I'm searching for. It is also great for presentations, as mentioned, it has plenty of pictures which you can obtain from student consult (remember to reference it) and is a great source to put down in the reference too. The text layout are also clear, easy to read, accompanied by clear tables of content. The sentences are not wordy and mean what they mean, unlike some textbooks which can be rather convoluted. The depth is also well grasped, aimed at medical student and equips students with what they should know. On the aspect of revision, it may be a bit heavy for last minute cramming and some say it's brother "Review of Pathology" may be more appropriate for that. Unfortunately I could not validate such information as I was too engrossed in this book. In conclusion, I am glad that I have come across this book, and I will recommend students to go to the library and check it out.

In this book is all what you need to know if you are a medical student. The English also is very simple and easy. The amount and quality of pictures are enough for recognizing the pathologies. Good!
