This book is definitely one that you want on your bookshelf. It is essential if you are constantly calculating engineering stresses and strains from anything such as micro medical equipment to macro civil structures. Its a must for engineers working with fea codes as a backup to check themnselves manually.
I think that this book along with Machinery's Handbook will cover basicly everything any mechanical engineer could wish for in terms of calculations formulas.
The 7th edition is very well laid out, with all tables at the end of the relevant chapters, therefore no longer cluttering the free flow of the text.

anyone who knows their stress from their strain will of heard of Roark, quite simply this is the only reference you will need for static stress and strain formulae. just a note of warning, this book is best used as a reference for engineers who have half a clue what they are doing, I wouldn't recommend it for anyone who is trying to learn stress analysis for the first time.

This book is one of a small group that should sit on the shelf of any serious mechanical engineer. It contains essential formulas that, if you use the book's logical structure, are available very quickly. There are some small variations versus the sixth edition but these are mostly additions. I don't know of any other resource that groups these formulas for structural members into one reference. Certainly most of these formulas are not available on the web (which is where most of my colleagues appear to go to for formulas these days). If you are a Mech Eng, order it now.

Very useful book with excellent references. Very useable for the likes of students and looking up how to do calculations. Very good book, can be hard to read in sections and may require re-reading a paragraph a few times to understand but adviseable for new mechanical engineers and students especially, will help with the work a lot (use the references during reports)
