A common complaint of mine when reading these sorts of books is that they must, must, must come with maps, maps, maps and a comprehensive index otherwise there is no hope whatsoever of following events..
The index in this book is quite good but the maps aren't clear at all. In many cases they seem to be reprints of contemporary maps the topographical detail of which obscure the relevant troop movements they attempt to show. I do think that if a town or geographical point is important enough to be mentioned in the text it should be possible to be provided with a map showing where it is.
Not an observation particularly restricted to this book but where each chapter relates to a defined battle or particular sequence a map for the purpose mentioned at the chapter start would be an asset.
The other puzzle is how Mr.Barry with the weight of his immense research upon him can write with such clear, lively and readable prose; battles and their grounds are described with their separate commanders, armies and events and then pulled together into a cogent overview. Reminiscent of War and Peace, one finishes a chapter mentally tired but foolishly glances at the next chapter only to be drawn in again, such is the Author's ability to "Tell the Tale".
This book tells you about the Austro-Prussian war against Danemark on 1864 for the possession of the Schleswig-Holstein Province and the Prussian-Italian war against Austria on 1866 (in Italy this is known as our 3rd Italian Independence war).
The book is bringing you by hand illustrating the situation of the technology, the Austro-Prussian war against Danemark, the different technological and organizational evolution of the two armies (Austrian and Prussian ones), the Prussian diplomatical preparation of the war against Austria (to avoid the risk of a French intervention that would have been too much for the Prussian Army) and finally the Italian-Prussian war against the Austrian Empire and his allies (Hannover, Saxony, Bavaria and Wurtemberg).
As in all Quintin Barry's books, you will find here complete Orders of Battle for all the armies involved in the conflict, wonderful detailed maps and reproductions of painting and drawings related to the various fightins happened in these wars.
The author doesn't neglect to examine the psychological side of every important general and monarch and the internal situation of every small German State.
For every historian and for every passionate of militar tactics this book is a must !
