Not one of Hughes most readily brought-to-mind collections but this volume explores movement in life and relationships with supreme energy of gentleness and silence, force and hubbub. Struggles, tensions and harmonies are set in tender, sometimes angry lines and places conjured from reality and would-be.
A true gift.

My overall impression of these poems is that they are full of light and insight. Luminous in quality. Compellingly brilliant work overall. Use of metaphors amazing in some instances. Very cleverly carries metaphors through quite long sections of poems, rather than just dotting metaphorical references around, as some lesser poets do, who can't seem to, "take them the distance they could otherwise go". Loved the different characterisations of the River in different moods, seasons and situations. However, sometimes feel the endings of some poems are a little disappointing. Just occasionally, the poet loses the momentum towards the end, and the poetry is less convincing at the ends, than the beginning and middles of poems. But generally an exceptional work.

What a comforting read, it is like the poetry says:a gentle flowing river, you can almost feel the running
river as you read each poem, Delightful.

Hughes with Nature in mind, The works are truly evocative - the river and the lives around/in it are appreciated so well by the text.
