What a waste of money. I had hoped for a book with creative and interesting salads but this book hardly strayed beyong throwing a tomato, cucumber and some lettuce in a bowl. When I buy cookery books, I hope to also learn more on the area but in this case did not. In summary, don't bother.

I bought this recently as an afterthought when buying the Pasta & Ravioli pocket book (which incidentally is as good as I hoped it would be).
I am very impressed with it to the extent that I am going to buy two more copies. One is for my neighbour who keeps an allotment and often gives me vegetables at this time of year, but whose wife jokingly complains about not knowing what to do with all those he brings home. The other is for my brother who grows vegetables in his garden and is a keen cook. I think they will all find the book useful.

Don't buy this hoping for inspirational salads - it's probably the worst River Cafe book I own.
There are 26 recipes in the salads section ( about 1/6th of the book) and that includes bruschetta but only 2 mixed leaf salads.
The recipes are brief, mainly without photos and the small book format makes it awkward to browse through.

A versatile book offering a variety of recipes for cooking the simplest and often the most mundane of ingredients - the vegetable. The recipes included are well chosen and are intentionally simple and accessible in the usual River Cafe style presentation and style of cooking i.e. straightforward and honest. The style of photography is very much 'what you see is what you get' as opposed to the soft focus photography of many cook books that more often than not leads to dissatisfaction when your own efforts never quite look like the idealised and filtered results of the clever food photographer. The writing style is no nonsense with nothing to sidetrack the reader.

I'd heartily recommend this book to the beginner, the cook who's stuck for ideas, the cook who's looking for different ways to cook vegetables and the experienced cook in need of a quick brainstorm. If you currently own any of the other River Cafe books (I have most of them) then this particular one is a useful quick reference book out of all the River Cafe Pocket Books (in my humble opinion). A little gem.

HASH(0x98a6d810) out of 5 stars Grams vs Ounces! 30 Aug. 2013

In general, I like the recipes a lot but many ingredients are listed in grams, etc. and the book contains no conversion table.

Not a major obstacle but shows an lack of sensitivity (of course unintended) to the American cook. Per the above, consumers should be advised.
