I was put off buying this game when it first came out because of the negative review by Mr G P Schofield. But as far as I am concerned he seems to have been playing a completely different game!
The graphics are what I'd expect from previous games, and I find the dialogue from both the main character and the NPCs really funny at times. I love being able to just wander about and explore. Many times I wander off the tracks and see how far I can get jumping up mountains for the sheer joy of it, and wondering how many other people have managed to get where I have got.
The first time I played it I sided with the Inquisition because I read somewhere that the magic (voodoo) system wasn't very powerful. I was constantly short of gold because I wasn't too sure what I could sell, and what I should keep. The second time I sided with the natives and thought that was the better way of doing it - although I used swords and pistols to fight with rather than voodoo. I was more selective on paying for trainers, and sold practically everything so I was never short of gold. So far I've been playing for about 110 hrs as I like to do all side quests and explore every inch of the terrain.
I now intend to play it one final time, this time siding again with the natives but on the high difficulty level.
The only defect of the game that I can think of is that Gothic 1 and 2 were better with the monster strength and difficulty. In this game everything seems often too easy and at the time u get to the top, there are no challenges.
It's one of the games I'd like to play again after some time.
But what makes this game even more fun is the humerous dialogue you get with the NPC's. But watch out, some bad language too.
Overall, a fun game to play. (But beware, traps are present, as too are creepy predators.)
Risen 2 follows on from the first, as we once again reprise our role as the nameless hero, now an officer in the Inquisition, for a little while anyway. We start off in the Inquisition fort on Caldera which acts like an ice breaking tutorial to the game, as we learn that the ancient Gods, Titans, are causing destruction. And in particular, Mara, with her Kraken doing her bidding. So we are told to go undercover with the pirates, who know where the only weapon is to defeat the Kraken, and thus defeat the Titan Lords once again.
Having now completed Risen 2, on Medium difficulty, which took me 35 hours all in. Here are MY OWN thoughts on the game:
Strengths:
+ Pirates of course ;-)
+ Graphics overall are really nice.
+ Ambient audio is excellent.
+ Voice acting is excellent.
+ Very humorous dialogue.
+ Interesting story & characters.
+ Elements of the previous game remain intact, digging up treasure, picking ore & using fires to cook food etc... a new lock picking mini game is fun.
+ Can fast travel using the map to key locations that have already been discovered. And use rowboats to fast travel.
+ A lot of blue language used, with some racism & sexism, but it adds to the realism of the period.
+ Clothing & bodies looks great, although it's hard to distinguish what cloths looks like when buying i.e color(i'm currently wearing a blue bandanna, green shirt & red trousers ;-p).
+ Traps & climbing make exploring more interesting.
+ The UI is easy to use, and looks nice.
+ Character progression is a hard & long process, due to expensive trainers & limited gold. I like this as it makes it more of a challenge.
+ Fighting NPC's is very challenging.
+ New concepts, such as training monkeys to steal for you. You then control them in 3rd person.
+ Night & day time cycle, with some missions & NPC's daily routines affected by this.
+ Stable enough game, 1 crash in 15 hours of play.
+ Wield more than one weapon, sword in right hand & you can have a pistol, thrown weapons, dirty trick items like sand or salt to throw in enemies eyes etc.. in the left.
+ Similar to Gothic 3, you need specific tools to take parts off animals. You can also make guns, swords & grog ,with the right skills.
+ Good replay ability value with different skills to try out.
+ Command your own pirate ship & explore the islands in search of treasure & weapons to defeat Mara.
Weaknesses:
- Locking onto a single enemy in large fights is too difficult & messy.
- Characters lips don't move realistically, this is attempted to be covered up by a lot of arm flailing during conversations, but it's very distracting.
- Faces are reused on NPC's, so it's hard to feel attached to specific characters you like.
- Some of the graphics are a bit iffy, particulary the lighting effects. For e.g when it's thundering outside, NPC's faces flash with light even though they are inside buildings.
- A lot of blue language used, with some racism & sexism, some maybe offended.
- Side quests are a bit repetitive.
- When fighting multiple foes, it can become tiresome as they outnumber you & not much you can do other than roll around like a tit.
- Unable to block some enemeies attacks.
- Could had done with an auto run button.
- End boss seemed bugged & easy.
Character progression is like the previous game, in that you earn experience points, or in this case Glory points, and then you can use the points to upgrade one of 5 main skills. Blades, Firearms, Toughness, Cunning & Voodoo. Each main skill have sub skills that need to be learned from trainers(Sneaking, pick pocketing etc...), if you meet the requisite level for that main skill, for sizeable amounts of gold. So it is important to have a strategy in mind as to what you what to achieve. If you want to train skills early on, you'll have to sacrifice things such as nice clothing for quite a while. Myself, I went with a cunning, thief of a silver tongued Captain & found myself swimming in gold & glory about half way or just over, that my stats ended up being Blade=7 Firearms=7 Toughness =6 cunning=10 Voodoo=2. In my next play, i shall concentrate on only 3 skills & see how that goes, but i'm a stickler for the thief type, but i want to at least try voodoo. There are some QTE's (Quick Time Events) that pop up for avoiding traps & to push some enemies off you like Jaguars or Panthers, but these are few & far between, so they aren't in your face all the time & are more enjoyable when they appear.
In conclusion, although i am finding some of it to be a bit of a hard slog tbh, i'm still very much enjoying planning my characters progression & find it very rewarding when it pays off. After your leave Tacarigua, about 10-11 hours in, the game starts to become more rewarding as you get your hands on more loot, nice cloths & better weapons. You feel much stronger taking on enemies alone as well. The combat with multiple enemies is a bit...oh no not this again...kinda moments, but i am finding the game to be more enjoyable than not. If you like RPG's that don't offer things up to you on a silver platter by making things challenging & make you work hard, then you will like this a lot i think. I'm sure there maybe a patch or two still to come to shore things up, but as Risen 2 stands, i think it is a good game. I'm really enjoying it a lot, the humorous dialogue has me in stitches at times. The game wont be for everyone, but I would recommend Risen 2.
Tips: Save your game regulary. Explore every inch of the islands, you never know what you will find. Save up your gold & glory untill you know what you want to do with them. Dont worry about picking all locks etc.. you can visit locations later on again. Most importantly, have fun
Update: Risen 3 Titan Lords - release date 12/8/2014.
