After 3 succesful albums in the indian classical idiom, showcasing her famous fathers compositions, Anoushka finally steps out on her own. As I would expect, she does so with phenomenal class and talent, quite simply producing one of the best indian-fusion CDs, where she really mangages to transpose the beauty and spirituality of indian music to a contemporary soundscape. And talking about sounds, not only dose 'Rise' showcase Anoushkas abilities as composer, but her productionwork is also stunning, with a rich, deep and varied sound through the entire album.
Of course she plays brilliantly on her chosen instrument sitar, but also shows her skills as keyboardplayer. Accompanied by a cast of very talented musicians, amongst them the accomplished pianist Pedro miño and the slideguitarmaestro Vishwa Mohan Bhatt.
This beautiful and complex work should clearly establish Anoushka as a major force in contempoarry music, regardless of genre.

This album is a finely crafted and beautiful piece of work. 'Naked' is one of the most amazing tracks I have ever heard by any artist from any country or continent.
Anoushka Shankar undoubtedly has inherited the same rare and special talent from her father. Long may she reign. Listen and be enlightened, or live in the dark for the rest of your lives - the choice is yours.
Enjoy,
Ernest the Goose

This album is simply amazing. I thought that the main review on here actually seemed to be questioning Anoushka's abilities. Much like her father Ravi, she is very skilled and talented in traditional Indian music, and has a great understanding of what we call Contemporary music. This is what 'Rise' is, it is a beautiful melding of the two styles together, mixing the traditional with the contemporary.

All of the songs on here are exemplary in every way. The composition and the performances are better than a lot of modern contemporary artists, who could learn a thing or two about arrangement, performance, and composition from this.

As the main review says, the whole CD feels like each piece picks a specific part of the day, starting with the waking up to pray (Prayer In Passing), then there's the sunrise (Red Sun), and from then carries on to the moon's coming out (Voice Of The Moon), and finally going to sleep after a prayer to the lord (Ancient Love - at least that's my take on it).

A beautiful conceptual piece that fits nicely with traditional Indian music (such as Rashid Khan, etc) and any contemporary music. Just a shame that I can't find the remix version on Amazon, which would be fantastic.

Five INCENSE-FILLED Stars!! Anoushka Shankar, the daughter of Sitar guru Ravi Shankar (who burst onto the 'world music' scene coincidentally with the rise of jazz' multicultural fusion movement AND the Woodstock "rock expansion" era) is now rising to sitar fame in her own right. As one of only three female sitarist (and according to her, the only one who is touring), she has learned her lessons well at the feet of her awesome father. And this CD shows she is AWESOME! The torch has been passed and she is a wonderful ambassador to bring new fans to the world of the sitar and indian music in general.

The use of the piano was a mild surprise, but in Pedro Ricardo Mi'o's hands it fits nicely in her musical world. And yes, her music is both ethereal and harmonically dense, with those dazzling internal rhythms that are transmitted back and forth between the sitarist and the her musical group. And voices chanting wonderfully. And she's a great composer. My favorite 'Pieces D'Resistance' are: the peace of "Prayer in Passing" (with the amazing 'mohan veena' instrument of Grammy winner Vishwa Mohan Bhatt), the haunting chants on "Red Sun", "Naked" (Anoushka's solo "show stopper" on multitracked sitar and piano without any other personnel support: "Naked", indeed), and "Ancient Love" (again with the slide wizardry of Vishwa Mohan Bhatt). But "Voice of the Moon" is a Tour De Force Par Excellence with it's mesmerizing multiple tempos and moods surging towards a wild climax. Wonderful music, Anoushka!! Five Big Stars !!!!

(Note: Truth be told, the AMAZING Anoushka Shankar is the half-sister of the AMAZING multiple Grammy-winning jazz/pop singer, Norah Jones. And what a double blessing to the music world are these two fantastic women. It is really a great pleasure to add both daughter's individual CDs alongside the father's in my music collection. Peace!)

If you are a little ambivalent about traditional Indian music this should be the cure, with the mix leaning a little but not too much toward jazz. A great selection of tracks, from the melodic to almost percussive acapella. The light and spiritual to dark and mystical. And overall great tapestries of sound. This is the real Wall of Sound that only sitar and tabla can do .Whats not to like. This is one great album that will last and last.

I'm catching up on Anoushka's back catalogue having 'discovered' her a couple of years ago. Wonderful. On this album I'm hooked on Ancient Love and Naked. Highly textured, sensitive and sensual music - and the production is always first class.

Deep in my heart, I feel like music of Sitar is the sound wave arriving from the ancient world. And women ... are the most beautiful creation of the nature. In Anoushka's music, in her charisma and in her beauty, I swam, I lost myself and I rose. Honestly !!!
