The Rise of the Humans: How to Outsmart the Digital Deluge Paperback – 1 July 2014
Purchase options and add-ons
But in other ways, the same technology has also disconnected us. Computers risk becoming less of a productivity tool and more like information firehoses, drowning us in a deluge of data that can keep us from doing meaningful, real work. The devices in our hands connect us like never before, but they vie for our attention to the point where they are beginning to disconnect us from the real world.
In this book, Dave Coplin, Chief Envisioning Officer at Microsoft UK, argues that right now it feels like the machines are taking over but if we stop thinking about the digital deluge as a problem and instead see it as an incredible opportunity we will be able to redress the balance. Technology offers our society so much but it is up to us, the humans, to rise to that potential.

About the Author
His previous book, Business Reimagined, provided individuals and organisations with a view of a new working environment based on collaborative and flexible working and on technology that, used correctly, liberates rather than constrains.
Dave has contributed to a range of media articles, conferences and forums all relating to the goal of making technology less "visible" and more "valuable" in our daily lives.

About the author

Dave Coplin is an established thought leader on the role of technology in our personal and professional lives. He has worked across a wide range of industries and customers, providing strategic advice and guidance around the intersection of a modern society and technology both inside and outside of the world of work. Dave is passionate about turning the base metal of technology into valuable assets that affect the way we live work and play and in so doing, move the focus from the technology itself to the outcome it enables.
His first book: “Business Reimagined”, provided a view of a new working environment based on collaborative and flexible working. His latest book, “The Rise of the Humans” provides a further call to action, for both individuals and organisations to harness not hate the digital deluge, to rise up and take back control of the potential that technology offers our society.

It's kind of funny but I'm writing this review on a Droid phone word processor and will save it to the cloud so that I can post it a bit later on my laptop. I guess you could say I found a way to utilize some of the technology I have more effectively. By the way, I also have most of those notifications shut off on my phone. Long ago I found out out emails and social networking notifications can wait quite honestly. Yes, it talks about that in the books also in many places.
“We are drowning in a sea of artificiality.”
It reminds us that information is useless if we accept it without reservations.
Information is only truly practical if we examine and analyze it in a concrete context, if we view information as an additional tidbit, another peace of the puzzle. A piece which we can choose to add to the existing sum total of our personal knowledge. ... Katarina Nolte
