IDW produced another great book, beautifully crafted, with an interesting essay on Alex Raymond and Rip Kirby. Every effort was made to find the best sources for the dailies: it's a pity that they are not - apparently - syndicated proofs; very few are from original art (the first week and some others); the bulk is made of pretty good reproductions, some from second generation sources; some are not so good... I wonder: where are the KFS proofs?

Alex Raymond together with Milton Caniff and Hal Foster is rightly regarded as one of the three giants of the American adventure strip. Best known for creating Flash Gordon, Raymond returned from World War 2 in need of a new strip and the result was Rip Kirby. This collection includes strips that originally appeared in 1946 to 1948 as well as an informative essay by Tom Roberts. Whilst not all the strips are reproduced from original proofs, the reproduction overall is good enough and we have some exciting storylines featuring private detective Rip, butler Desmond and girlfriend Honey Dorian. Buy this book (and subsequent volumes) and revel in the work of a master craftsman at the peak of his powers.

In Alex Raymond's career, surely there are only masterpieces. This superb edition of Rip Kirby is really the definitive one.I hope that it will continue also with John Prentice's work, that gave us so many good stories after Raymond's unique art.

If, like me, you're an old Rip Kirby fan, this book will bring back a flood of memories. Excellently bound volume but pricey. A real collector's item!
