HASH(0x8b60cdb0) out of 5 stars Fine Escape Movie 20 Dec. 1999
By Sean Patterson - Published on Amazon.com
Riot is a good action film about Jim Brown and Gene Hackman staging a riot in prison in order to allow a distraction so they can escape through underground tunnels. Brown and Hackman are great in this and the suspense of the last 30 minutes is killer! I rank this one up there with Escape From Alcatraz. A must see for all fans of escapism movies.

HASH(0x9bde2354) out of 5 stars Great Movie 19 July 2011
By L. Ross - Published on Amazon.com
Format: DVD
Riot was filmed on location at the Arizona State Prison in Florance, Arizona. Prison staff and inmates were used as extras during the filming. Warden Eyman played himself and did a great jod at it too! I have been waiting years for this to come to DVD. This is a great movie and well worth the price.

HASH(0x8b619258) out of 5 stars SHOULD'VE LEFT THE INDIAN IN HIS CELL 22 Feb. 2014

Nice prison movie I fondly remember watching back in early 70's. All-time great Gene Hackman, fresh off his outrageous performance in BONNIE AND CLYDE [1967] two years earlier, and football Hall-of Famer Jim Brown, just off his attention-grabbing role in the hugely popular THE DIRTY DOZEN that same year, play inmates who stage a riot to negotiate for improved conditions as a ruse for an underground escape. Hackman is the mastermind who almost loses focus as they deal with the warden and the press while Brown plays the reluctant but resolute pal who unwittingly gets caught in the mess. Some filming at the real prison with some actual inmates and the real warden. Actor Mike Kellin, with the unmistakable face and voice, is a 'riot' as Bugsy---a really nice performance. Hackman doesn't have it easy negotiating for such a heterogeneous and dysfunctional group such as this as dissension and schism ensue and the deadline for escape approaches. Along with the excellent THE GLASS HOUSE [1972], among the first of the unsanitized prison dramas that touched upon homosexuality in prison which was fresh ground for those times. Soundtrack song "100 Years" by Bill Medley of The Righteous Brothers is evocative and stays with you. So just sit back with a cup of 'raisin-jack' and enjoy.

HASH(0x8b619618) out of 5 stars Riots, Prison Breaks, Action...and a Surprising Study of Leadership. 11 Aug. 2014
By Jon Ives - Published on Amazon.com

A lot of the movies I special order from Amazon don't live up to the memories I have from childhood. This one, however lives up to it and surpasses it. Gene Hackman does his usual excellent job as an untrustworthy, yet highly intelligent, leader of a prison riot that is being used as a diversion for a planned prison break.

But it is the riveting, yet underplayed, performance of Jim Brown that makes this movie an edge-of-the-seat thriller. Originally opposed to the riot since he has little time left to serve, Brown is forced into trying to keep things from getting out of hand by protecting a brutal guard. After which, Brown finds himself more and more named the leader and mastermind of the riot, first by the inmates, then to his dismay, by the warden. (Played by the real warden who is every bit as tough and believable as you might expect.) It's not just a movie about a prison break, it's a movie about leadership and command and how they can be thrust upon men and women.

Why this movie has never been replayed on cable in the last few decades escapes me, since the setting and story are timeless. As a matter of fact the only thing that gives away the date is a couple of police cars in one scene.

I won't ruin the ending, but believe me, you'll be surprised and not let down.
