I have had few smart chargers over the years both cheap (aldi), and expensive (optimate & ctek) and they all do a good job of maintaining the battery, with the only difference being the longevity of the item. The aldi one died after four years of use whilst the ctek & optimates are still going strong 8 years on. This Ring unit is what I would call mid-range and has some nice in built features like the hook and the led torch but is let down somewhat by the poor quality battery clips not to mention the abysmal instructions.

As with all smart chargers (ctek & optimate inclusive) the connection leads are never sufficiently long enough for my needs (connected on driveway from garage)and you end up having to buy 'extras' like extension leads that add to the base cost of the device and really hacks me off to be honest!! Saying that, I cannot find any extension lead for the device but they do offer a permanent battery terminal connection lead for another tenner. It says recommended for use on cars upto 1800cc but to be honest this will charge a higher capacity battery on bigger engined cars but will just take longer to get to the fully charged state, this is of course providing that the battery has at least 5v minimum already left in it, if it doesn't then it just won't work.

Charging time varies according to the battery state and unfortunately there is no indication of where the charger is in the cycle, so you have to keep coming back every few hours to check on it which can be a PITA but not a massive dealbreaker. Other than the hideous blown plastic packaging there is no case for the item so you may benefit from doing what I did and buying a cheap mens toilet bag to house it all in. Given the lack of add ons of the Ring and provenance in the smart charger sector I would still recommend ctek or optimate over this item for the price. Alternatively just go for one of the cheaper ones from aldi at a quarter of the price.

Following a protrated period of work over 28 days I only used my car for short distances recently, and even then very infrequently, I was therefore surprised one evening to discover the battery had insufficient power to start the engine. Being an Automatic and parked in such a position that another vehicle could not get near enough to use jump leads, I was temporarily stranded. The answer was either get another battery or charge the battery in situ. Having the benefit of Mercedes Benze Break-down Assistance, I was able to call out the mechainic who was quickly able to get the engine running with a 'slave' battery. He tested the battery and found it low on power (11.7 volts). That was just insufficient to turn over the engine from a cold start after many hours of being parked outdoors in near freezing conditions. His advice was to get a 'smart charger' to trickle charge the battery to maintain its fully charged condition. He said that short journeys of less than 10/15 minutes are barely sufficient to replenish the power consumed by starting and running with lights on etc. resulting from the journey. And the cumulative effect, over time steadily drains the battery. This charger is therefore ideal, as it not only monitors the condition of the battey but re-charges it as and when necessary, without any fear of 'over-charging' the battery and therefore will not damage it. In his opinion lightly used vehicles should be kept regularly charged in this manner as a 'matter of course'. The only criticism I have, is that that the leads do come with a detachable plug, so that the charger can be connected by means of a socket, as opposed to crocodile clips.Read more ›

Battery charger is very useful and easy to use. I was able to set it up myself without any prior car maintenance knowledge. Will not overcharge which is good.

This type of charger is ideal for keeping batteries fully charged on motorbikes, lawnmowers etc that are not in everyday use.The charger keeps the battery fully charged but does not overcharge so it can be left permanently connected.
The charger is very well made and the case is described as "weatherproof" although I would not recommend leaving it outside on a permanent basis.A built in LED light is handy for making a safe connection in the dark and there is also a hook built into the case.A lead is provided with "crocodile" clips for battery connectivity although I think another lead with more secure ring connectors should also have been provided for a permanent connection to a battery.I have made my own leads for this purpose.
I've had this connected to my Italjet scooter for the last 3 weeks. The battery showed 12.3 volts on first connection.I checked the next day and this had risen to a more healthy 13.4 volts.Weekly checks have revealed the voltage remaining constant at 13.4 volts with no signs of any overcharging having taken place.

After you have battled with the packaging which seems reluctant to let you access the product this is a robust looking product. It has long enough cables with crocodile clips to connect to your battery. It has a handy hook to hang it up when in use and an excellent LED torch - the cables are just long enough so that you could shine the torch on the terminals as you fix them without needing a third hand to hold a light.

The instructions, unfortunately, are poor as they cover the whole range of the manufacturer's products in one leaflet and you, therefore, have to extract bits you need. The cables also do not have the fixing necessary to attach this to your battery on a semi-permanent basis, such as when maintaining a caravan battery over the winter. Had these two things been rectified then this would have been a five star review.

Ideal for occasional use for charging the battery in a vehicle but less suited than others for a permanent connection.
