The usb receiver dongle seems unnaturally sensitive to heat. I have it in a Intel NUC and as soon as it get a little warm the reception distance shrinks to 1 meter. Making the remote useless.
Fix this one problem and it's a 4.5-5 star product.
Each key exerts quite a firm "click" when pressed, which is welcome, although it is as firm as one would want it to be on a unit of this type. The only problem is some of the keys rather than clicking, can tend to "crunch", that is to say multiple clicks are produced when pressing certain single keys on the unit, specifically, the Enter key and the Space key, which can be disconcerting and is largely self-defeating, seeing as feedback on key action exists for the very purpose of "accurately" indicating key depression.
The unit's range is quite frankly terrible, or that is to say highly prone to interference. I have the receiver plugged into a USB hub, positioned discretely in my home entertainment center. Plugged into this hub also is an XBOX360 PC receiver; not an unusual home cinema environment by any means. With the XBOX 360 receiver plugged in, the unit's range; presumably due to interference, was reduced to around 1.5 meters, which is of no use to me sitting just over three meters away, on the sofa in an average sized living room, wishing to command my HTPC with this remote. I also own a pair of digital wireless headphones(Sennheiser RS 170) and whilst wearing these; which are admittedly extremely dominant in the 2.4ghz frequency band, the unit's range was effectively reduced to nothing, its operation became completely erratic and dysfunctional, which is no good for me late at night when I might wish to command my HTPC with this remote, whilst wearing my headphones.
I have given this product 1 star, its rating would have been 2, if it was more resistant to interference and cumulatively 4, if it was a third of the price.
At this price point(£35.00 at the time of purchase), I expect a unit that doesn't rattle or creak, feels firm in hand, is built to a standard at which its parts "align" cosmetically and can "cope" with being used in the environment for which it is designed to be, i.e. in which it WILL be expected to operate alongside one or two other wireless devices that transmit at 2.4ghz.
One thing I will say; more about the company than the product, that did impress me, was the presentation of the product, the way it was boxed, the complimentary "thank you for buying our product" card and so on and so forth, it is just genuinely a shame that the product did not attain the level to which its makers aspire.
Pity as it looks nice, great size and is good with XBMC, although I found the direction keys somewhat insensitive. Also the backlight in the keys is quite uneven.
Back it goes...
Having tested a lot of wireless keyboards this one from Rii sits closer to the top of their range (the remote bar style model seems to be the top dog with programmable buttons and the IR remote built in) However this style has the more "hand friends" curved shape that some might prefer. It's quite a light unit though the plastics do have decent density to them and the keyboard has a reassuring click when keys are pushed it does feel a step up in build.
Standard QWERTY layout with an orange FN button this is used to access the top row F keys and activate the air mouse mode (the AltGr key has this function) as well as a few other key presses such as backlight control, Del, home key (for Android) etc. Quite logical and clearly laid out, but it is a USA keyboard not UK one. Full backlight on this pad including the media controls at the top these two dials have on the left side the volume/track skip/play and pause on the right the OK button and cursor keys with home/end/page up/down doubled up via the FN button. The two shoulder buttons act just like a normal mouse for L/R clicks with a somewhat larger "flat" control pad in the middle you can double tap this to select as well.
Onto the actual performance nothing to complain about here because the keys are responsive and firm and the track pad is accurate but it is smaller than a laptop touch pad so you might want to adjust the pointer speed it worked well for me though during testing. What makes this stand out a bit is the "air mouse" activate this and you can directly control the cursor by moving the pad around in your hands you don't usually get this on a small hand held keyboard and it's very useful particularly for Android TV boxes or media computers not to mention presentations.
Charging is via the top micro USB port it takes a couple of hours to go from flat to full no information on the battery size though the back light will hit it a bit even so I've been testing this all week and the battery seems to be quite good endurance wise. Range was approx. 8 metres clear line of sight pretty good compared to some models I have tried and I didn't have any obvious signal loss. Quickly touching on the 3.5mm audio jack this allows you to connect headphones, and there is a built in microphone. The microphone arguably the most useful addition if you are using Viber/Skype or VOIP software this will prove invaluable and saves the hassle of connecting up a separate one. The microphone is located top right below the control pad so it won't get covered by accident I had no problems getting this to work on the Win 10 pc and Android box I used it's more than up to the job subject to the touchpad being held reasonably close (ie normal sitting position)
Any areas I would change? Well this is more expensive than some lower models but it does offer the air mouse function and audio out/built in microphone so it depends on what you're after if you need those extras it could save the hassle of picking up an air mouse or microphone. Two potential weaker points the USA layout isn't ideal and the back cover which houses the nano USB receiver it doesn't give access to the battery I would like to have an easy way to change the battery. That said this is a fine higher end mini keyboard and has some very useful extras included.
