I wasn’t sure what to expect when I picked up this book. Aware it was a ‘man cheats’ story, I hoped it wasn’t going to be a tale about ‘revenge best served …’ It wasn’t. I’m delighted to say it was a bright, uplifting read with a touch of Florida sunshine. Well done to the author for the evocative location descriptions, which transported me right there from the grey old UK. Well done, too, on the attention to detail regarding Carrie’s career as an interior designer. I found her character totally believable. Actually, she’s one of those women you would love to hate (beautiful, talented, well off), but can’t help but fall in love with, particularly as, through the sub-plot, we see her caring nature and realise when she loves she loves with all of herself. Without wishing to give the plot away, the scene where she dashes back to be at her sister’s side had me welling up. Congratulations here, Brad, for turning convincingly from playboy into perfect hero.
Briefly, the story opens with Carrie leaving work early on her sixth relationship anniversary, intending to make one of her boyfriend’s fantasies come true, only to find him indulging a fantasy of his own with someone else over the kitchen island. Forgoing cutting off his shirt sleeves, after a respite to collect herself, Carrie decides on a new life instead, in a new town, away from the reminders of her failed relationship. Brad, aforementioned hero, is anything but when we first meet him. He’s drunk, to be exact, and with is playboy reputation, is someone to be avoided (not easy when he turns out to be her first client). He’s also got the hot looks that hook. Again, the author makes him believable and, more importantly, root for him when Carrie’s ex-turns up to derail his and Carrie’s fledgling relationship.

For six years, Carrie has been with the love of her life. She has never wanted nor needed another man, as Roger was her ‘everything’.

On the day of her birthday, Carrie heads home early to play out one of Roger’s fantasies, however coming face to face with Roger bent over the kitchen island with a mysterious red head wasn’t the welcome she was hoping for!

With nowhere to go, she turns to her sister, Sara, and brother-in-law, Sean, for a shoulder to cry on. However the crying doesn’t last for long. Carrie knows what she has to do. Get out of town and make a new life.

Leaving Texas behind, Carrie arrives in Palm Beach, Florida, determined to put the past behind her, and move on with her life.

Carrie is a wonderful, beautiful young woman who has been badly hurt by the one person she thought loved her, unconditionally. You feel her pain right in your stomach, as her heart is broken in two.

She is also very tough, strong and independent, not only for holding her head high and not bowing down to Roger’s constant pleas of forgiveness, and offers of marriage, but also for having the nerve to up-sticks and move states, to a place where she didn’t know anyone.

When we first meet Brad, he’s drunk, rather leery and makes a fool of himself coming on to Carrie. I knew from that moment that he was going to be her new client.

It took me quite a while to warm to Brad. He has a playboy image, and I found myself hoping that Carrie wouldn’t fall for his charms, and then waiting for him to hurt her, but time and time again he proved himself to be quite the gentleman, and I warmed to him, eventually.

Carrie is an interior designer and she's living the perfect life. She is very good at her job and well respected by her employer and customers. Carrie is close to her family and friends and has had a long lasting relationship with her (hopefully) soon to be fiancé. When she comes home early on their anniversary to surprise her boyfriend she ends up being the one getting a surprise. Devastated Carrie needs to start her life all over again. The only way she can do that is to pack up her stuff and move across the country.

Carrie ends up in Palm Beach and her house turns out to be more than she expected. Things start out great when she also manages to get a good job at a fantastic interior design company. Her first assignment is to design a house for Brad Larson. Carrie has no intentions of starting a new relationship and she sets clear boundaries for the town playboy.

Brad has a successful business in buying and selling houses. Before he sells the houses he always lets them be designed first and then he will live in them for a while. Brad has never been a one woman kind of guy. He usually hooks up with someone for a little while and then he goes his own way again. When he meets Carrie he is instantly drawn to her. He wants nothing more than to get to know her but she's keeping him at a distance.

Is Carrie ready to take another chance on love when old memories are resurfacing? Will she choose the man she thought she wanted to marry or will she be brave enough to stay on the new path she's chosen for herself?

The Right Design is a sweet romantic story. Carrie is a successful woman, but she isn't snobby or arrogant and I liked her character very much.
