Book Description

This is a memorable food odyssey: journeying through an ancient landscape discovering great food, creating dishes from recipes that have lasted the course of time. This beautifully illustrated book contains 120 recipes from Rick's major new 2015 series on BBC2.

About the Author

Rick Stein's passion for using good-quality local produce and his talent for creating delicious flavour combinations in his books and restaurants have won him a host of awards, accolades and fans. As well as presenting a number of television series, he has published many best-selling cookery books, including French Odyssey, Coast to Coast, Far Eastern Odyssey, Rick Stein's Spain and Rick Stein's India. Rick has always believed in showcasing local seafood and farm produce in his four restaurants in Padstow, Cornwall, where he also has a seafood cookery school, food shops and a pub in the nearby village of St Merryn. In 2003 Rick was awarded an OBE for services to West Country tourism. He divides his time between Padstow and Australia, where he also has a seafood restaurant by the sea in Mollymook, NSW.

Since the book was announced to the public earlier this year, I have been dreaming and imagining what the book would be like. My first Rick Stein book was Rick Stein's India, and it is my best ever book I own (I have more than 120 cookbooks on my shelf, 3 Rick Stein books until now). I just got this book and I began drooling only looking at the first few pages! What a beautifully presented book! Beautiful layout, stunning photographs of the recipes and revealing glimpses of his travel through the Eastern Mediterranean! Every recipe is accompanied with the traditional and quite amusing Rick Stein introduction and a small story of why this recipe is in the book and what his his personal affection to it.

The book is divided into seven parts:
Mezze
Street food
Meat
Poultry
Seafood
Vegetarian & Sides
Dessets,
and of course his signature - the extras pages, which I personally enjoy a lot!

As I originally come from "around" the region (Bulgaria), many of the dishes, especially those from Greece and Turkey are very similar to dishes in my own country. Most of the recipes are from Turkey and Greece, then Venice and Croatia, and very few, perhaps 4-6 recipes come from Albania. It is a pity, as I expected more Albanian recipes. For me this part of the world (although very close to my birthplace) is still unknown and I was eager to learn more about their food traditions. I still give the book five stars, as it is a compilation of the greatest dishes of the region, presented in a true Rick Stein style! This book for sure won't gather dust on my cookbook shelves!

Every dish that I have tried so far from this interesting and inspiring cookbook has worked deliciously. The recipes are well researched and carefully presented with brilliant photographs. I am loving the TV series too and have visited many of the places described, so it is great to bring back foodie memories. This book reminds me of Elizabeth David's Mediterranean Food brought up to date and with pictures.
My daughter saw the book and asked for a copy for Christmas. Altogether I cannot recommend it highly enough.
Please bear in mind that I do admit to being a bit of a Rick Stein fan. So this review may be a bit biased.

This book is a compilation of recipes from Greece, Turkey, Italy, Croatia, and Albania. Books based around tours present a dilemma on how to divide recipes up - whether by country or by course - and Rick has chosen the latter (though not then by country). Each chapter has a small preface discussing the places they'd visited, the type of food eaten... Photographs include landscapes, some of the people, as well as the dishes. Whilst the dishes are appealing, in truth it feels a little disparate. I suspect this is because the show hasn't aired, so we haven't "been on the journey" yet. No doubt the magic of television will bring it more memorably to life...

Addendum: Having watched the first episode I can comment a little more fully on the structure... In the first episode Rick explains that though he's travelling through each region, his recreations will all take place in a kitchen on a Greek island. The regions covered make more sense with a map, included here for clarity...

This is definitely the best cookery book from Rick Stein. I was not a fan of R.Stein and twice gave his cookery books to charity shop a few days after purchase. Why? I found the recopies complicated to follow. But this book is different. This book is superb, RS communicates through recopies, pictures with ordinary people who like to cook good food. I bought it two weeks ago and have tried a few recopies with success. The secret of cooking delicious Mediterranean food is to use fresh vegetables &herbs, spices and cook the cuisine under low fire and this book follows that. I would say none of his recopies are difficult, the ingredients can be bought from any normal supermarket and also the recepies are healthy. Therefore the book appeals to me.

Love all Rick’s programmes and books! And I find this one is the best cookery book from him. I like how the book is organised and how it complies recipes from Greece, Turkey, Italy, Croatia, and Albania with mouth-watering photos. I also enjoyed reading about his travels and what inspires him to pick those recipes. His enthusiasm makes me want to visit Eastern Mediterranean and experience what he experienced. Beautifully printed and easy to follow. Would recommend to anyone who likes Mediterranean food.
