This is not just another minor performance from an obscure provincial European opera house, it is a significant artistic achievement that deserves wide recognition as such. Lubeck is a relatively small theatre with a stage, orchestra and resources to match, so what we have here is Wagner on a relatively small scale. However the production team make good use of what they have, the result punches far above its weight. There is an excellent, good looking cast who can both act and sing well. Some of the performances are very good indeed. The orchestra lacks the depth and polish of, for example, Bayreuth, but it plays well under Roman Brogli-Sacher who keeps the music moving along nicely with lots of energy and tension.

This is a modern dress production which seeks to reflect the cultural influences the Ring has had since its first performance. This is of particular relevance to Thomas Mann who spent his formative years in Lubeck and who was profoundly influenced by Wagner. The information booklet points out the parallels between the Ring and Mann's novel Buddenbrooks,(which concerns the downfall of a great family and begins with the building of a new house), in Siegfried particular use is made of The Magic Mountain, (set in a sanatorium, where Mann uses disease as a symbol for a sick society which was Germany in the aftermath of WW1). The most infamous historical figure influenced by Wagner is of course 'You Know Who' , inevitably he also gets a look in, fortunately this is not overdone.

This is a very human Ring which downplays the mythical elements, with giants , dwarves etc played as normal people The special effects are limited in scope and scale, during transformation scenes the camera tends to show the orchestra, presumably because there is little happening on stage.

The description of this set on the Amazon websites is that it is restricted to Region 2. However, I ordered it anyway and sure enough it is "code free" on the box. I have tried to tell Amazon several times that all opera DVDs and Blu-Ray sets are all Worldwide or Region zero, but they will not accept this even when the image of the back of the case on the website proves my statement. My advice to opera lovers is to ignore the stated region codes on the Amazon website, because I have now bought over 150 Opera DVDs, including many that were described as having limited region coding, and none of them were restricted with respect to region when they arrived.

Lubeck Theatre's production of Wagner's 'Buhnenfestspiel' was superb in every respect on stage, and is almost as good on DVD! The direction is so inventive and amusing, making the story crystal clear as well as very involving. The singing and playing of the orchestra is first rate: Roman Broghli-Sacher getting everyone involved to give of their very best - and more - besides proving himself an inspirational conductor.
I thoroughly recommend this Ring above all others: it may not have the 'stars', but this is a plus point in this ensemble marathon. It is just SO enjoyable - no reservations! BUY IT!!!(and wallow!)
Booklet notes/subtitles in English(rather archaic!) for those whose German(like mine!) is suspect!
