Richard spent twenty years working in the airline industry before deciding to pursue his passion for music. He began by working in advertising, writing and producing over 2,000 ads and jingles. He has written and produced in-flight radio shows, launched Turkey’s first commercial radio station, and produced concerts for artists that includes, Paul McCartney, The Beach Boys, Chicago and America.
His books include Bill Wyman’s Blues Odyssey, which won the Blues Foundation's Award For Literature. Richard wrote, co-directed and produced the Peabody Award nominated TV series based upon the book. He has co-authored Rolling with the Stones, with Bill Wyman; My Take, Gary Barlow’s autobiography; Bowie, Bolan & The Brooklyn Boy, legendary record producer Tony Visconti’s autobiography and Better Late Than Never, Len Goodman’s autobiography. His biographies include Sinatra, the acclaimed illustrated biography of Frank Sinatra and Marilyn Monroe – words, pictures & music. His most recent book is Verve - The Sound of America, a 400 page illustrated history of this iconic record label, jazz and the label's founder Norman Granz.

His articles have appeared in The Daily Telegraph, The Times, The Mirror, Goldmine and Record Collector; he also appears regularly on radio and occasionally on TV, usually talking about music. He has written sleeve notes for record labels that include, The Island Story, numerous blues anthologies including Bill Wyman’s Blues Odyssey and Rude Dudes, Universal Music’s 100 Years of the Blues, Satchmo: Louis Armstrong – Ambassador of Jazz (10 CD box set and 200 page illustrated biography), Ella Fitzgerald – The Voice of Jazz (a 10 CD box set) and Verve The sound of America (A 5 CD box set). His DVD essays include The Rolling Stones' Sweet Summer Sun – Hyde Park Live and Crossfire Hurricane.
