This is, generally speaking, a "school-daze" humor adventure book, but to stop there would shortchange the book. I admire the range and depth of the story, and the author certainly undertakes to touch all the bases.
There are quite a few main characters. We have at least six major students to follow. Unusual for such a book, we have a number of teachers who hold their own as central characters. Then we have a wide range of locals, mostly appearing as villains. Then we have guest characters who appear in just one of the books in the series. (This is Book Three in the Ribblestrop series. You don't have to read them in order, although that does help keep the players straight, since most of them are introduced and provided with their backstories in Book One.) These characters have all become more developed as the series has progressed, and they have ended up with more depth and appeal than is common for just a barmy-school series.
The humor is all over the place. The general sense is dry and deadpan, which I like. But, there are always a few madcap and screwball set pieces. There is a lot of banter, and a lot of sly throwaway humor for the alert reader. (The author is particularly accomplished at tossing in sly needles at just about anything that catches his attention, from bureaucratic paperwork to child services to school regulations.)
This Book Three has a very sophisticated plot with a great number of individual threads that all tie up nicely. We start with a ripping airplane adventure; the school is evicted from their Tower and has to live rough on the grounds. There are at least three criminal plots by numerous villains.Read more ›
