The music is, of course, wonderful. Django was a unique guitarist and his improvisations are both technically amazing and very moving and exciting. Only he, one feels, could combine the freedom of jazz improvisation with his gypsy heritage. Grappelli was a first class front-line partner and the rhythm section - although a little leaden - got better as the years passed.
This set set ends with the final session held in London just before the war broke out. Django returned to Paris where he stayed throughout the Occupation. Grappelli remained in London and, although he and Django got together again after the war, this split really marked the end of the great 'Quintet of the Hot Club of France' recordings. This set is a splendid tribute to a remarkable partnership and cannot be too strongly recommended.
I can strongly reccomend this foot tapping gem!....Mark
The only thing that puzzles me is: Why haven't I bought this box set ages ago?!
So: If you have just discovered Django Reinhardt's music this is a great "starter kit"!
By the way: Django was Belgian, not French as the box suggests...(Poirot springs to mind...)
A very informative booklet is also enclosed, detailing the history of Django, Stephane and how the
Quintette de Hot Club de France came together, along with track listings, recording dates and personnell.
You don't get that with a download, so get the box set!
