Product Description

Product Description

Baker's landmark fifth album was mostly self-produced, with the R&B and soul singer writing five of the album's twelve songs. The first single, Body and Soul, became Baker's first Top 40 hit in over five years; I Apologize would later net her another Grammy. Other tracks include Plenty of Room; It's Been You; Wrong Man ; her take on the classic My Funny Valentine, and more.

Anita Baker is a legendary vocal embellisher; she can hold the end of a line and bend that final syllable through several notes in her trademark smoky alto, thus giving the lyric an extra emotional twist. Audiences love this sort of vocal ornamentation, and a singer must resist the temptation to overdo it, for at a certain point, decoration becomes clutter. Unfortunately, Baker succumbs to that temptation on her new album, Rhythm of Love, which is so embellished with slides, moans and trills it's often difficult to find the songs underneath it all. --Geoffrey Himes

Format: Audio CD
I have four albums by Anita Baker: the others being Rapture, Giving You The Best That I Got and Compositions.

Her first album, Rapture, is easily her best with neither of the following two coming near that very high standard. Don't get me wrong, they weren't bad albums, but Rapture was something extra special.

The fourth album. Rhythm of Love, comes closest to emulating Rapture without actually succeeding.

Anita's voice and her singing are excellent and are what makes her the supreme artist that she is and on Rhythm of Love the quality of the songs is nearly up to Rapture's standard. The songs are, however, not as catchy as on the first album and that is the biggest difference between them.

However, for me, Rhythm of Love is an improvement on "Giving You..." and "Compositions"; the songs are stronger and more accessible.

A joy to listen to. An album worth owning, a voice that needs no introduction. I am a fan , always will be and hope that there are still those who get to discover Anita Baker.

A great addition to our Anita Baker CD Collection. One of her better CD's - well back to her best.

Sad to see Anita decline into over-cliched, over-jazzy pap compared with her magnificent 'RAPTURE' album.
Whilst the selection of songs is good, the treatment of the material is disrespectful, particularly on well-known tunes such as 'My Funny Valentine' and 'You Belong To Me.
A tragic waste of a great talent.
