Product Description

John Foxx And The Maths' fourth album of analogue synthesizer music, Rhapsody, was recorded live in November 2011 at The Maths' MemeTune Studios. It's the sound of a multi-talented band playing electronic music together, featuring John Foxx (Vocals/Keyboards), Benge (Percussion/Keyboards), Hannah Peel (Violin/Keyboards) and Serafina Steer (Bass/Keyboards). 'Foxx's creative fires still burn white hot.' Mojo The tracks range from John Foxx And The Maths tracks, 'Catwalk' and 'Shatterproof' from their Interplay debut album, through to 'The Shadow Of His Former Self' from their 2012 LP, The Shape Of Things, via classics from Foxx's Metamatic era, including 'Burning Car' and 'He's A Liquid'. 'The Maths turn out to be a superb foil for Foxx.' The Wire 'Foxx continues to make his most startlingly contemporary-sounding music in years'. The Quietus John Foxx has been experimenting with electronics since the 1970s when he worked with the likes of Brian Eno and legendary Krautrock producer Conny Plank in the original line-up of Ultravox!. Described by Duran Duran as 'the Velvet Underground of our generation', early Ultravox! had a massive influence on the generation of acts that followed including Gary Numan and Simple Minds . His solo material, starting with 1980's Metamatic album, has been namechecked as an influence by everyone from Aphex Twin to Leftfield; Afrika Bambataa to The Orb, as well as by a new wave of electronic acts such as The Soft Moon, Gazelle Twin and Matthew Dear, all of whom he s recorded with in the last year. He's also recently released the European Splendour EP with Jori Hulkkonen featuring a remix by David Lynch and followed that up with Empty Avenues with Belbury Circle on the Ghost Box label. Four albums in, his John Foxx And The Maths project with analogue synth specialist Benge, is arguably the most successful of his career so far. Features 10 tracks recorded live at Benge's MemeTune Studios in November 2011. The band line-up is John Foxx Vocals/Keyboards), Benge (Percussion/Keyboards), Hannah Peel (Keyboards/Violin) and Serafina Steer (Keyboards/Bass). Rich, analogue synthesizers mixed with violin and bass, this album captures forward-looking electronic music being played live by a band.

This version of The Maths is the live line-up, with Hannah on Violin and guitarists augmenting a still majorly electronic group. Having seen them focus on Johns' harder material supporting OMD recently, which was a bit too intense after 45 minutes, this set is far more eclectic, and hence more enjoyable. The added guitars, although occasional, do lift the dynamics a bit.

There are still a few staples here, with John's vocals rawer and added real instruments, so something to please most of his fans.

Unfortunately the label forgot to credit the contributors in the actual artwork, so there is a sticker on the pvc sleeve, but I couldn't peel this off so once you've unwrapped the item their contribution is 'lost' forever!

John Foxx And The Maths' Rhapsody is made up of 10 tracks recorded live at London's MemeTune Studios in late 2011, shortly after the UK Interplay tour. The Maths line-up on this session is as follows: John Foxx (Vocals, keyboards); Benge (Percussion, keyboards); Hannah Peel (Violin, keyboards); Serafina Steer (Bass, keyboards). It's fantastic to hear a live band playing with electronics, plus the addition of bass guitar and layers of violin also creates fresh angles and edges on many of the songs. Foxx's voice is often stripped of effects, adding an emotional shiver to songs such as 'Interplay", 'Hiroshima Mon Amour' and 'Just For A Moment'. Meanwhile the opening track is an instrumental version of 'The Good Shadow', which features - as do nearly all of the tracks - Hannah Peel on violin. Artwork is by Jonathan Barnbrook.
