Product description

Amazon.co.uk

Billed as the world's first ever completely AV album to be released on CD-ROM, Rewind marks a timely move for long-standing Ninja cronies Hexstatic--on from the realms of the visual and into the sonar yonder. The name Hexstatic is synonymous among circles traversing the pool of experiments in electronica with cut-and-paste, cutting-edge visual skulduggery--so fans will be pleased to hear that their musical constructs follow a similar vein. The interactive element to the ROM is where this comes into its own however--each track is enlivened by a unique and intricately arranged visual accompaniment. Without the light show stoners can have fun playing "guess that sample" (anything from Space Invaders to a Kung-Fu master to Jimmy Saville), whereas with it they will invariably find themselves lost to the grey area of living-room cyber-space. Aurally, stand-out tracks are the saxy "Horn", and funked-up "Kids Can Dance", which go to prove Hexstatic's musical mettle, but in listening terms, by track 11 you might feel like you've been relocated to a planet known only as bleep. --Ruby Shepheard

I ordered this album after hearing a couple of Hexstatic tracks on the Coldcut Solid Steel radio show, and I wasn't disappointed. Some of the tracks use samples from Speak'n'Spell, old arcade games, TV and movies. Deadly Media is a track made up using samples of human speech as instruments, which is pretty clever when you think about it. The second CD allows you to watch videos and remix the tracks yourself, presented via a "Battlezone" interface! It's worth the money just for that!

I discovered Hexstatic via the excellent Solid Steel collaboration album, and decided to investigate further. At the time, rewind was the only album they had released, and it's a belter.

This is true innovation, without being difficult to listen to. There really isn't a bad track on here, and there is the bonus of videos for many of the tracks on the accompanying CD-ROM. There is real genius at work here - taking samples from films, video games and everyday life and blending them into tunes that you just want to listen to again and again. Having grown up in the 70's and 80's, there are some very nostalgic elements here too.

Even my kids love tracks from this album - Ninja Tune being a particular favourite, even though they were only four and five years old when they first heard it.

If you're only going to be adventurous once this year, take the plunge with this album. It's well worth it.

Personally speaking, one track is good, but the rest is a bit iffy. I cant remember why i brought it.

5.0 out of 5 stars its all about the crazy videos... 14 Sept. 2000
By mcpooyan - Published on Amazon.com

i was first introduced to hexstatics work in the mid 90's on the early MTV amp, and ive been looking for more ever since...if you like coldcut, youll love this CD. i would describe his work as low-key and technologically minded, with a heavy emphasis on well chosen samples. the cd-rom that comes with it is one of the main reasons i ordered this album...very cool, retro - roller-ball defenderage-electronics.... contains videos for every track on the cd, and some of them have a "interactive remix toys" which let you remix the videos themselves in a simple kind of way.

5.0 out of 5 stars Outstanding 12 Feb. 2001
By A Customer - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
These guys are simply amazing. Not only is the music absolutely top notch, but the videos on the second CD are nothing short of miraculous.
'Ninja tune' does an absolute credit to the record label and, as a track, has got to vie with any of your back catalogue favorites. 'Robopop' is another one I'd pick out, but it almost seems silly to pick out individual tracks from a great album like this. My only gripe is with 'The Horn' since the initial laugh of the porn samples (which is a bit of a dance music cliché since most albums seem to have one) soon tires.
The videos are probably the best in dance music, but that's just my opinion. Even if you'd disagree, the second CD isn't just some 'bonus disk' it's an integral part of the whole and well worth your time.
I can't fit enough superlatives into this review so just go and buy it!

5.0 out of 5 stars Mind-blowing audio/video talent! 14 Dec. 2000
By Christopher Carneal - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Audio CD
It is an absolute shame that a group this intelligent, creative and technically skilled in the new mediums of digital editing and audio sampling aren't making as big a financial gain from thier brilliance as the pop industry makes on it's own idiocy. From a more trivial angle, I don't know how these guys break even for the small amount of money they ask for such a power pack of entertainment for under 15 bucks. When you watch just one of these videos on the 2nd CD, it's obvious these guys spent months perfecting the visuals with state of the art equipment and concepts.
Even if you aren't sure you'll like music (which is eclectic melodic electronica) spending some time with the included CD-ROM is guaranteed stimulating eye candy and worth the price of admission.
