Book Description

A beautiful paperback edition of Rewards and Fairies, Rudyard Kipling's second magical collection of stories and poems.

About the Author

Nobel prize-winning writer Rudyard Kipling was born in Bombay, India, but returned with his parents to England at the age of five. Influenced by experiences in both India and England, Kipling s stories celebrate British imperialism and the experience of the British soldier in India. Amongst Kipling s best-known works are The Jungle Book, Just So Stories, and the poems Mandalay and Gunga Din. Kipling was the first English-language writer to receive the Nobel prize for literature (1907) and was amongst the youngest to receive the award. Kipling died in 1936 and is interred in Poets Corner in Westminster Abbey.

I thought I'd read the whole Kipling Canon but somehow this one escaped me til now. A delightful follow up to Puck of Pook' s Hill, a mixture of old friends and new, interspersed with Kipling' s wonderfully unfashionable poetry.

I loved this as a child and when thinking of a book to get my granddson who really loves C S Lewis I thought of this. It was the right decision because he loves this book too and it has opened up the world of Rudyard Kipling and a new source of stories to him.

Rudyard Kipling's 'Puck of Pooks Hill' and 'Rewards and Fairies' aren't quite what they seem. The stories are a mixed bunch and head in more than a few quite different directions.

Revisiting the stories now in my seventh decade, the content bears little resemblance to my memories of them when, with my Mother's patient encouragement, I waded into them when I was seven. And what I certainly didn't remember then was Kipling's quote now on the back cover of the 1995 edition of 'Rewards and Fairies' by Wordsworth Classics: 'The tales had to be read by children, before people realised they were meant for grown-ups'.

Some editions are better than others. My favourites are those illustrated by HR Millar. His pictures are a great help in bringing the characters to life and fixing the periods in which the stories take place. These very clearly tell the reader that the 'fairies' bear no resemblance whatsoever to those with wands and wings.

Lovely edition of a classic book about olde England (close to where I grew up) and ancient magic - a collection of historical short stories told by the character Puck himself. I gave this copy to a friend's daughter aged 12 across the pond along with the first book in the series 'Puck of Pooks Hill' and she has loved both, as did my two daughters. Fantasy and magic do not begin and end with Harry Potter!

It was nice to see this reissued. I loved it as a child and it was one of the books which started my lifelong interest in history. I gave it to my 13 year old grandson and have not yet heard how he liked it.

This is one of the most magical books ever written. I love that I can have it with me wherever I go.
