We are introduced to Will and Daisy – the main investigators, who bring in psychologist, Mandy, to supply insight into the very disturbed mind of the killer. As the title suggests, the plot is about vengeance, executed by the angel Malakim, who is not short of imaginative and horrific ways to see child abusers out of this world. There are some extremely gory details – but stick with it because the plot will take you to some unexpected places. With any luck you will guess who the avenging angel is, and I think that it is a confident author who helps the reader to get there, without giving too much away too soon. We meet the mysterious Felicity and we aren't sure if she is a good guy or not. She certainly seems to wield arcane powers that can be used to either help or hinder the investigation – or both.
Set in the shadow of Operation Yewtree, there is clearly more to be done to make the world a safer place for children, and the Malakim is committed to carrying out that work.
My only criticism is the character of Mal, Will's long suffering wife, who, in my opinion, is too good to be true. I imagine that most police officers would love to have a partner at home, as understanding and compliant as Mal – but in this day and age? Not a huge problem for me, and presumably she knew what she was getting into! A great read, and excellent to know that it is just the first of three.
I voluntarily chose to read this ARC and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased.
