Musically the mid Nineties doesn't seem like the sort of place Janis Ian should inhabit. Grunge had just just collapsed and in both the US and UK silly little boy and girl bands were coming to the fore. Why would a 40 something lesbian folk singer songwriter deserve any exposure or credit? Well, because she was and still is better than most other groups clogging the charts. Pretty much critically and commercially unknown then and these days, Janis Ian has been steadily releasing music since the late 60s, blissfully uncaring of the money she makes or credit she receives (or doesn't). Revenge is one of her better efforts, finding the right effort better her angry lyrics and smooth sounds and here she sounds more accessible than ever. No posers are ever going to listen to this, but for any sensible music fans who may still be out there, let me try to convince you to purchase this.

`Ready For War' as the title may suggest opens the album with intent; it is deceptively gentle but fuelled by a candlelit mood. Ian's vocals are searingly beautiful here, not husky until she gets loud, not too sweet. The lyrics get steadily more graphic and violent as the song progresses and you can sense Ian getting more and more riled up while the music remains a slow burning jazz.

`Take No Prisoners' has an equally evocative title, yet this one begins at a higher pace and is led by hammering
drums and piano. The feeling here is of a back alley jazz bar where the singer stuns the audience into frenzy. Again the lyrics are bitter, dealing with any number of themes, the melodies are difficult to grasp as they continuously float, and we get a nice piano solo followed by some fiery guitar.

Perfection, pure and simple. A classic, even in Janis terms (and that's saying a lot.) From the rocky "Take no prisoners" to the emotional "Stealing Fire" to the tear enducing (and I mean that) "Walking in the Rain", this d's take you places you've never been before, and maybe never wanted to go... until now. 12 cracking songs that beg to be listened to- over and over and over and.....
