Mark uses clear and simple English and unravels the concepts of positive and negative reinforcement/positive and negative punishment, coercion, flight and compliance. He describes four Models of Horsemanship...the first three of which could be described as "traditional". These models provide an insight into the psychology behind the practices - the way the horses are kept, trained and otherwise used.
The fourth model (The Natural Horse Keeping Model) is for the 21st century and the growing numbers of people who seek to give back to the horse its dignity; those who want to find a way to live and work with horses while offering them a lifestyle in keeping with their needs and their nature. This is Part 2 of the book "The Good Stuff"!
In this half of the book Mark discusses keeping horses holistically in as natural environment as possible. He discusses the Track System/Paradise Paddock as an option. There is an excellent chapter on control and communication, again in clearly defined terminology and another on positive reinforcement training and relationships.
In the past 50 years we have devoted time and money and educated the public so that it is no longer acceptable to cage and tie up wild animals. It is an offence to beat a dog. We all know how dolphins and dogs are trained. Horses deserve the same protection and people should know they will have a deeper relationship with a horse that has been trained in this way. Mark has used Clicker Training.
I have long kept my horses this way and they are Friendship Trained- no ropes, pens, sticks or clickers!Read more ›

The author certainly made me stop and think about everything I was doing on behalf of my horse and take a look at my beliefs from a completely different perspective--that of a horse--an animal with definite biological, social and emotional needs. Although it felt rather challenging to read so many ways in which I was not doing my horse any favors (when that's exactly what I thought I was doing), the book's rationale and approach to a new set of horse keeping methods makes perfect sense as it connects new and existing ideas and methods with a new paradigm. The transition away from what we've known and done for so long with our horses may not be overnight, but this book reveals a good philosophy to govern future decisions and a step-by-step guide to healthier, happier horses.
I encourage every horse owner to read it, especially if you've ever found yourself thinking, "This is the way I've always done it..."
Excellent book, very cheap price for the information you will receive and the help it will give to you and your horses.
