This book explains how, for over 6000 years man has made use of the horse with little regard for the nature of this incredible animal. It is written for those who love and want to truly understand horses.
Mark uses clear and simple English and unravels the concepts of positive and negative reinforcement/positive and negative punishment, coercion, flight and compliance. He describes four Models of Horsemanship...the first three of which could be described as "traditional". These models provide an insight into the psychology behind the practices - the way the horses are kept, trained and otherwise used.
The fourth model (The Natural Horse Keeping Model) is for the 21st century and the growing numbers of people who seek to give back to the horse its dignity; those who want to find a way to live and work with horses while offering them a lifestyle in keeping with their needs and their nature. This is Part 2 of the book "The Good Stuff"!
In this half of the book Mark discusses keeping horses holistically in as natural environment as possible. He discusses the Track System/Paradise Paddock as an option. There is an excellent chapter on control and communication, again in clearly defined terminology and another on positive reinforcement training and relationships.
In the past 50 years we have devoted time and money and educated the public so that it is no longer acceptable to cage and tie up wild animals. It is an offence to beat a dog. We all know how dolphins and dogs are trained. Horses deserve the same protection and people should know they will have a deeper relationship with a horse that has been trained in this way. Mark has used Clicker Training.
I have long kept my horses this way and they are Friendship Trained- no ropes, pens, sticks or clickers!

This book is really thought provoking. It is about the 'whole package' of how a horse likes to be kept (like a horse). The author then explains that if horses are kept like a horse this then creates trust. It is completely different to other books I have read which only takes parts from this book. It took me a while for the penny to drop as to what the author was trying to explain - I had to read the last 2 chapters again and then it suddenly became clear. I would highly recommend this book, some parts need to be reread and thought about and some people might not agree with everything the author writes about but it really is a great book.

great read for folk looking to find other ways to keep their equines as near to nature meant them to be as possible in a domestic environment. full of interesting statistics and nutritional information. a must have. Helps to de-clutter the mind in relation to types of horse care and explodes many myths about what horses actually need to survive alongside humans. paddock paradise an unusual concept but making absolute sense when you consider the true history of horse evolution.

HASH(0x90455690) out of 5 stars Your horse will thank you. 21 Sept. 2011
By M. Twohig - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Have you ever read or learned something that afterward you thought, "Geez, now I can't go back to how I used to [fill in the blank]." You're happy you learned it, but you can't pretend you don't know and things will have to change. This book is like that. It could radically change the lives of horses for the better as well as open up tremendous new opportunities in the horse industry for those who want to be on the leading edge of that change.

The author certainly made me stop and think about everything I was doing on behalf of my horse and take a look at my beliefs from a completely different perspective--that of a horse--an animal with definite biological, social and emotional needs. Although it felt rather challenging to read so many ways in which I was not doing my horse any favors (when that's exactly what I thought I was doing), the book's rationale and approach to a new set of horse keeping methods makes perfect sense as it connects new and existing ideas and methods with a new paradigm. The transition away from what we've known and done for so long with our horses may not be overnight, but this book reveals a good philosophy to govern future decisions and a step-by-step guide to healthier, happier horses.

I encourage every horse owner to read it, especially if you've ever found yourself thinking, "This is the way I've always done it..."
