What a fantastic adventure and lesson in patience and determination. Ryan Littrell has created a great piece of history, intertwined with a current day romp through libraries, family genealogies, and world travel. He has certainly matched the skills of genealogists who do that for a living, but more than that, has created a vision of Scotland not often seen by most. I, personally, have an interest in all things Scottish, and have been fortunate to watch and be part of another documentation of a Scottish Clan. It is incredible to me to see how various viewpoints manage to merge into common facts, in essence re-building history despite a lack of ancient documents. Kudos to Ryan for an entertaining and enlightening book.

Fascinating book researching the history of a family which emigrated to America from Scotland. The researcher had practically nothing to go on but managed to learn a lot about his family history through censuses, land search, long forgotten small graveyards - and clans in Scotland - especially (without disclosing too much) the massacre of Glencoe.
Well worth reading - I couldn't wait to find out more.

This book started out as an explanation of the authors research into his McDonald family history. Part way through, every other chapter included a history of the McDonald/Campbell feud. Very interesting; I never knew the background, just that there was a big disagreement between the two clans.

As I have an interest in family history myself I found the details of the research interesting too but the DNA stuff went over my head a bit.

Would recommend it though.

A delightful, interesting and knowledgeable book; especially fascinating if you are a MacDonald, McDonald, McDaniel, MacDonnel (or any other variation).

Particularly refreshing, in a genealogy account is the separate historical story encompassing a dramatic period in Scottish History that coincides with Ryan Littrell's research of his forebears. The author has captured the essence of what all genealogists aspire "to put meat on the bones"

A further revelation to the reader is the authority a DNA sample can give, in establishing and verifying the truth and accuracy of an investigation. It is a well written piece of work, the detailed findings are clearly and eloquently written, moreover it involves the reader emotionally; I enjoyed reading this book very much

Very movingly written. Brought historical events into a personal perspective. Highlighted the ties of blood we all have but are often unaware of. Loved this book, highly recommend it.

It was a hugely enjoyable read. The author is to be congratulated on re-weaving such old tales with his new one.
