About the Author

M. K. Clinton lives in Louisiana. She and her husband have been happily married for over thirty years. The parents of two grown children, they are now enjoying the freedom of not punching a clock every day. After working at a local high school for many years, M. K. decided to stay home and concentrate on writing. In addition to writing her books, she also loves blogging, reading, family time, and her dogs. The couple shares their home with Bentley, a lovable Basset Hound and Pierre, a feisty West Highland Terrier. She found the inspiration for her book series, The Returns, on Bentley's coat. He was born with a perfect number seven on his hip. Ironically, he is also the seventh dog that the family has owned.

What a hoot!
I picked this up as a suggestion from a friend as I fancied something light and humorous - and I wasn't disappointed.
Take one (dead) FBI agent, re-incarnate him in the body of a Basset Hound and send him back to finish his last case, along with several other 'returns' also connected with the villain: Bones, former World Champion Featherweight boxer, now a Chihuahua; fashion designer and computer hacker extraordinaire, Pierre the flamboyant Westie; Tucker the Golden Retriever and former Navy SEAL, and Faith, the beautiful one-time fashion model and now their (probationary) angel whose task is to take care of them.
Faith can't cook, Tucker's enthusiasm knows no bounds (I've owned Golden Retrievers - he's perfectly cast!), particularly when it comes to diving into water, Bones struggles to remember how tiny he is, but has a useful line in dodgy contacts, and Pierre would rather be at his sewing machine. Add in Bentley's old partner who falls for Faith while trying to figure out the case that killed his best buddy, and you have a fine, fun romp.
I will admit I struggled at first with the impossibility of what the dogs could do with their paws (operate computers, sewing machines, be car mechanics and drive) but if you can cope with that, this book is well worth a read just for the oh-so typical doggy characteristics of the characters and the colourful New Orleans setting.
And of course, the villain gets suitably taken down at the end!

Samuel Taylor Coleridge (1772-1834), an English poet, literary critic, and philosopher, coined the phrase "willing suspension of disbelief." He stated that he hoped his writing would create "a human interest and a semblance of truth sufficient to procure for these shadows of imagination that willing suspension of disbelief." M.K. Clinton has done a marvelous job of writing a fantastical tale that enabled me to willingly suspend my disbelief and enjoy her story of the "Returns," people who come back to life in the bodies of dogs because their work on this earth is not yet finished.

The concept for The Returns borders on the absurd and yet it has just enough "human interest and semblance of truth" to allow the reader to focus on the delightful mix of humor, suspense, and just a touch of romance as the plot unfolds. I found myself often amused, never bored, and eagerly reading the book to its end. When I reached the end, I felt a sense of disappointment because I so thoroughly enjoyed the story. Fortunately, it appears that the author has written and published a sequel to this book.

The writing is solid, the plot is well designed, and the sense of humor is wonderfully carried throughout. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting to immerse themselves in the delight of pure escapism.

Wasn't sure about this book when I downloaded it for Kindle but thought i'd give it a try. It's very good. Unusual take on a good old fashioned crime caper where the dogs take down their man! The dogs are (were) a Detective, A navy seal, A tailor and another I can't quite remember. They had all had dealing with a nasty drug trafficker and all round bad guy. This was their chance to take him down. Teaming up with an trainee angel, the Detective's former partner and a street cat, they track their prey. He doesn't know what hit him. Set in New Orleans around Mardi Gras this book captures the sounds and sights of the festival really well. Would recommend for a good light hearted adventure.
