Product Description

From the Back Cover

Her marriage of convenience seems far too convenient . . .

Desperation drove Cecilia Mallory to seek a union with a stranger—one who would wed her sight unseen and grant her full access to her inheritance with no expectations whatsoever. She anticipated, perhaps, an older, undesirable, equally desperate husband—never the young, vibrant, and devastatingly attractive man who answered her call. What could such a man really be after?

Unknown to Cecilia, Viscount Michael Blackthorne, a soldier and gentleman, owes a debt of honor to Lady Cecilia's father, and granting her unusual request to wed seemed a worthy way to repay it. But an unseen threat perilously close at hand is convincing Michael thathis true responsibility is to protect the beautiful, warm-hearted lady he has married . . . the woman he is unexpectedly coming to love.

Cecilia is the daughter to Lord and soldier. When he dies she receives a letter from his friend and companion Sargent Blackthorn. After 18 months of corresponding she asks him to marry her so she can access her funds to save her family estates. He agrees and they marry by proxy. 6 months later during a storm a young virile man turns up at the door... It is Sargent Blackthorn her husband. They don't know what to make of each other at first although Blackthorn is instantly smitten with her but she's simply curious and wants out of the marriage asap because she doesn't want to lose control of herself. After several attempts on her life and her husband helping her younger brother Cecilia and Michael (Sargent /Viscount Blackthorn) fall in love and want to return to India together and have a life together. If you want a slightly frustrating but worthwhile romance novel this is it. This is a true tale of love conquering all and patience being a virtue that is well worth having especially when you have a reluctant spouse ;)

The story begins with letters being written from Sergeant Michael Blackthorne to Miss Cecilia Mallory, informing her of her father's death during the war. Michael believes he owes it to his comrade's memory to be the one to tell her, since they were close. From then on, Cecilia and Michael exchange letters, and she informs him of her financial troubles. She can only access her inheritance if she marries, but is concerned whoever she weds will only want her for her money. Cecilia suggests marriage by proxy, to which Michael accepts. She never thought she'd meet her husband, until he appears home from war after suffering some injuries. He wants to stay with his wife, but Cecilia has been content with her situation and is reluctant, but does relent.

Michael wants to get to know his wife, and they grow closer. She still has reservations, mainly to do with her inability to believe he likes her for who she is, and not her money, but when he is given the title of viscount, she realises her mistake.

There are other problems for Cecilia, mainly to do with her brother, but Michael is supportive of his wife, and goes out of his way to help her.

Overall, the story was good, but towards the end, it dragged on. Michael is a lovable character, whereas Cecilia is someone you just want to shake, as it takes her so long to believe Michael is a good man. However, I believe this is a 'blip,' as I've read quite a few other books by this author which have been great, so it hasn't put me off reading more by her.
