Kurt and his girlfriend Julie are among the witnesses who gather at a top secret army research centre to watch a newly-created serum re-animate a decaying corpse and transform it into a deadly bio-weapon. After the experiment is over, the young couple are involved in a horrific motorcycle crash which kills Julie and leaves Kurt obsessed with the idea of using the serum to bring his beloved back to life. However, things don't go quite according to plan, and instead of the girl he once knew, Julie is resurrected as an indestructible flesh-hungry monster.

Return of the Living Dead III is the third go-round for a premise intended as both a sequel to and a satire of the George A Romero Living Dead films. This could just as easily have been an entry in director Brian Yuzna's Re-Animator series, and indeed the plot nugget seems derived from the last shot of Re-Animator itself, as a devoted youth (J. Trevor Edmond) revives his freshly dead girlfriend (Mindy Clarke) with trioxin, a military zombie-making gas, and learns to regret his actions. Though it has some left-field ideas--the heroine turns herself into a DIY Hellraiser Cenobite poster-girl with extreme body piercing to distract herself from the desire to eat her boyfriend's brain--and effective action, it is still confined by its low budget and thus stuck with ordinary acting, a minimal plot and too many dumb developments.

The central thread is the necrophile/SM romance, which ends up in a liebestod clinch in the army base's furnace, but there's a sub-plot about a quartet of zombified gang members which serves mainly to get some violence going every few minutes. Clarke is a striking presence, studded with bits of metal like a punk porcupine, but her performance flat lines even before her death in a motorcycle crash and revival as a zombie, while the rest of the cast--with the honourable exceptions of Kent McCord as a senior officer and Basil Wallace as a mystical down-and-out--are typified by Sarah Douglas' strident militarist mad scientist, who wants to put zombies in armoured exoskeletons and deploy them as combat troops. Nevertheless, this is gruesome fun for the fans, with some imaginative zombie mutilation effects.

I am a massive horror film fan and this is definately one of my favourites. It seems that the people who have watched the Return trilogy are divided between those who highly regard the first two while shunning this, and those who think no.3 is the superior film. I think that one of the reasons this is better is because it does try and do something different with the formula, whilst still in keeping with the franchises' over-the-top style, fast-paced action and extreme gore.

Personally i think horror should be played straight anyway, but this is definatley not too serious a film so as to completely detach itself from the first two. Sequels usually fail because they try to replicate the originals and the best ones are always those that have changed things and progressed. I don't see how comparisons can be made with Halloween 3 as that had absolutely nothing to do with the originals whereas with ROTLD3 this is simply not the case, it is just a development.

The ideas of pain, death, love and desire in the film are explored well, and although the acting seems a bit crap at the beginning, the descent of Julie into undeath and her subsequent battle to suppress her bloodlust for the sake of not harming the man(boy?!) she loves is very good. All the scenes in the sewer are exciting and quite disturbing, probably made more so by the trashy looking 80s style special effects(CGI will never re-create this!) along with the emotional significance of Julie's actions when she finally kicks some ass. Also, the final scenes between the main couple are actually quite heart-wrenching. To me anyway.

A wonderful horror film overall which i felt i needed to defend as i really don't understand the negative reviews attached to it.
And if you don't care for anything i've written so far then please, if you're a hetero man or lesbian, watch the film if only to see the lovely Mindy Clarke in action - she is divine :-)

certainly a hell of a lot better than part 2 and closer in brilliance to part 1 this has been slagged off by some but to me it was a brilliant mixture of love and horror. When i watched it i thought of the love in true romance and natural born killers and even romeo and juliet. It is trying to tame the beast through the love you once had. Nice and gory also, not as slapstick as the first two but there is the odd daft moment for sure. I really enjoyed this and would recommend this to anyone.

Being a fan of this shlocky "series" helps of course...

This is darker take on the "Return..." concept, taking the grim and gory humour of the first - and best - film but losing it's overt silliness, while basically ignoring the slapstick part two altogether. ( I have to admit I'm an unashamed fan of all three - they're flawed, sometimes terribly so, but I grew up with them and can't help treat them a little like first loves. )

Melding the living dead concept with Romeo and Juliet, this is streamlined, simply and effectively directed by b-movie horror veteran Brian Yuzna with some strong and straight performances from it's cast, most notably Mindy Clarke - who is both gorgeous and outstanding as the infected Juliet-like main character, charting her transformation from punkish ( for the nineties at least ) rebel to tortured and constantly hungry zombie-in-waiting ( no spoiler alerts needed, the front cover sells the movie on this transformation entirely. )

An emotional core runs through the flick, but this knows what it is and delivers in spades - a gory, shlocky living dead movie, black in tone and humour.

Recommended.

This film is just as good as I remembered.It ain't for the faint hearted but it is a little funny in some parts too.The storyline is well....watch and draw your own conclusions.probably one of the classic gory scary horror movies I've seen but they don't make em like they used to.happy viewing....

Much like Part II, this is a sequel that will not please all ROTLD fans, let alone all horror fans, let alone all viewers who might stumble onto it. Unlike Return of the Living Dead Part II, this one isn't much of a spoof and any comedy is pitch black and pushed right into the background. Classic comedy in this one is relegated to the "Gallow's humour" variety, such as the boyfriend propping his girlfriend's corpse up on his bike, Weekend at Bernie's style or the asian shopkeeper who hops into Curt's van, hoping to get away from some thugs, only to find a brain-eating zombie in the van and crying "OK, YOU LET ME OUT NOW!". Let's not forget the girlfriend, Julie's, "reprimanded-puppy-dog" expression in the classic moment where she is told she cannot eat brains. However different this may be, I would not go so far as to say this film has "nothing to do with the first two Return of the Living Dead films" or "has more in common with Brian Yuzna's Re-Animator series" as others have done.

Here, director Brian Yuzna and writer John Penney (also the editor of The Return of the Living Dead back in 1985) have crafted a story which is largely gleaned from elements of the first film. Essentially what they did was take the "Freddy/Tina" arc from Return of the Living Dead (and, to a lesser extent, the "Joey/Brenda" arc from Part II) of a lover watching their loved one die and return from the dead, reversed the genders and then examined it more seriously and closely. Throw in a dash of George A. Romero's original concept for Day of the Dead (the military using the dead as soldiers), a slice of Hellraiser's sadomasochistic Cenobites and a chunk of Pet Semetery for the setup and voila!
