An excellent study of the handling of the troops returned from Dunkirk

This is a very readable and informative study of the subject, the dispersal of the troops after their disembarkation from Operation Dynamo - the Dunkirk evacuation - and the subsequent evacuations from the rest of France. It is recommended for anyone interested in the history of British railways in wartime. This edition is 184 pages, with photographs, maps and illustrations in the text, and a fold-out map of Dover Harbour inside the back cover. It was published in 2010 by the Oakwood Press, a specialist publisher of railway history books, and is No. X096 in their general catalogue.

From the Author's Conclusion -
"There can be no denying that the Battle of Flanders was a significant defeat for the Allies, but it could have been a great deal worse. More than 35,000 French soldiers were taken prisoner. For every seven soldiers who escaped through Dunkirk, one man was left behind as a prisoner of war. Nevertheless, in the nine days from 27th May to 4th June, 338,226 men escaped, including 139,997 French, Polish and Belgian troops, together with a small number of Dutch soldiers. It was not, therefore, for the British at least, a rout and this is due in a large part to General Gort's timely anticipation of the enemy's moves leading to the issue of the orders necessary to maintain contact with adjacent units on both flanks. This can only be achieved by discipline and training, together with adequate communication both up and down the lines. The success of Operation Dynamo was that, whilst the BEF lost all its heavy equipment, a quarter of a million trained and by now battle-experienced soldiers returned to England."
