Review

No one was more prescient about the economic malaise and popular resentment that has hit the United States than Ed Luce in his previous book, Time to Start Thinking. His new book, Retreat of Western Liberalism, broadens that picture to cover the Western world. It is a must read for anyone trying to make sense of the waves of populism and nationalism we face today (Liaquat Ahamed)

Edward Luce provides a terrifying view of the challenges facing the West. We have to hope that his prophecies are self denying - something that is more likely if his penetrating analysis gets the wide attention it richly deserves (Lawrence Summers)

Book Description

An insightful and brilliantly researched book about modern society, and a stirring analysis of how enlightened ideas can be defended from the issues we currently face.

An outstanding book Policy makers wake up and start engaging with the left behinds. Anywhere have had too much for too long. Most memorable line in the book refers to Brexit as a kind of door opened by the Anywheres and the Somewheres charged through.

Trump, populism, the decline of the West. For anyone seeking to make sense of the unsettling political times we live in, Edward Luce's brilliant book "The Retreat of Western Liberalism" is a must-read. The book looks at the causes behind the weakening of liberal democracy and the ways in which the norms of political behaviour at home and abroad are coming under threat, and he offers a lucid analysis of what we need to do to protect our democracy and values from populist predators. This is a very readable book (you could take it to the beach) and his arguments are supported by an array of fascinating and quoatble facts and vignettes. Luce's prose is as clear and elegant as his analysis is sharp and perceptive and it is truly a delight to read. This book should be made compulsory reading for all our political leaders.

The Retreat of Western Liberalism is the book I've been waiting for. Its sweep takes in America, the UK and continental Europe and highlights the structural forces that's ailing the middle classes across all those countries. Other books focus only on America, or Brexit Britain, or the French far right. Luce's work stands back from the particularities and brings out what is threatening the west in general. The writing is pacy and engaging. The analysis is acute and the forecast is troubling. As Luce argues, western liberalism is in retreat but that does not mean that it has collapsed. It is up to us - the readers - to do something about it. I couldn't recommend this book more highly. Five stars.

5.0 out of 5 stars A vital read 12 May 2017
By Richard Longworth - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Hardcover
Edward Luce has combined a reporter's eye for the telling detail and a great story with a scholar's deep grasp of history to produce one of this year's must-read books. Like the best journalists and scholars, Luce connects the dots, between economic change, political upheaval, strategic transformation and the lessons of history. Luce starts at the fall of the Berlin Wall, when it seemed that Western liberalism had triumphed once and for all and the Western faith in unending progress had been vindicated, and takes us through the last quarter century to the present sour moment when, as he says, "Western liberalism is under siege" from the forces of regression, populism and nationalism. The first chapter alone, on the impact of globalization on the stability and institutions of the West, is worth the price of the book, and should be required reading in Washington, Wall Street and academe. In clear if stark terms, Luce shows how globalization has raised living standards around the world while impoverishing the Western working and middle classes on which democracy rests. These embittered voters are withdrawing their support for a liberal politics and economy, and the result is Trump, Brexit, illiberal politics, the challenge of Putinism and the rise of China.

Luce offers no easy optimism. Centuries of Western leadership are at stake, he says, and so is democracy. "Many of the great questions facing humanity will be answered largely in India, China and Africa-- not in the West. For the first time in centuries, the West must bet used to that."

Do solutions exist? Yes, but only if the people who will seek them first absorb the lessons that Edward Luce has given us in this vital book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fast Paced and Easy to Read 16 May 2017

I loved Edward Luce’s writings during the US presidential election on the struggles of middle class America, and why people would (and ultimately did) vote for Donald Trump. I have been waiting for his broader take, and I wasn’t disappointed.

The Retreat of Western Liberalism is fast paced and easy to read. The core argument is that “it’s the economy stupid” and the Left (and the Right for that matter, but his focus is on the Left), has been too focused on identity politics to offer effective solutions. Luce also shows convincingly that the problem isn't restricted to the United States, his primary focus. All liberal democratic societies are struggling as globalization upends existing economic arrangements. It's a broad structural problem that won't be solved through the lens of identity politics.

For Luce the entire liberal order is on the verge of collapse (i.e., liberals aren’t being hysterical), and preserving it will be really really hard. But its a cause he believes in, and one he's willing to fight for. This isn’t a fun book, but it’s an important book. It should definitely be on the must read list of anyone trying to figure what in the world is going on.

5.0 out of 5 stars Must read 12 May 2017
By Book worm - Published on Amazon.com

This is the best primer I have found for why America and other democracies are facing such a troubling crisis of self-confidence. Luce writes beautifully about the economic causes underlying populism and the historic backdrop. No other book combined such geographic sweep, historic depth, and lucid prose. My only quibble is that he is relatively light on solutions. But this is minor. As he points out, there can be no cure until western elites understand their responsibility for what is happening.

A lucid presentation of an overlooked undercurrent in US politics. Kudos to Joan Williams from UC Hastings for tackling this issue.
