Bought this for my Dad as a jokey retirement present - while we've also had a good laugh over it, it was a bit more serious and somber than we expected (particularly the chapters on "dealing with changing emotions" and "planning your funeral"). Bit of a strange book in the sense that it's a bit too serious (and depressing) at stages to be too much of a joke gift; but at the same time, I'm not sure I can entirely see the market for a book for older people about planning their funeral and dealing with their own dementia...

I bought this as a gift. I thought it would be about doing things and enjoying yourself. It's filled with practical advice about growing old, caring and which is the best coffin. Fortunately my brother-in-law saw the funny side.

Probably too serious for a joke present- bought for my Dad as a retirement present. Didn't see the funny side really but is working his way through it. Not sure residential homes and choosing your coffin is what you want to think about at 65!!

I like the style of writing, which is humourous on occasions and obviously written by someone who knows. The content is very comprehensive and although sections are not long, there is sufficient information to reassure and provide points of reference. Much more readable than some books on the market

Hope to put a lot of the suggestions/ideas into practice when my husband and I retire next year, but in the meantime a really good (and humorous) read. Well worth buying if you are contemplating retirement.

Haynes publishing famous for 45 years in producing step by step instruction car manuals which no doubt most will have or have used have recently tackled some unusual subjects. I knew the author was working on this but now it is on sale .
It is a Workshop Manual - for retirement !
But written by none other than Stuart Turner , RAC Rally winning co-driver in the Saab with Erik Carlsson, former competitions manager at BMC in the 1960s with all the Mini wins and a similar position at Ford Motor Company in the 70s and 80s as well as in charge of corporate affairs and head of Ford Advanced Vehicles plant in Essex.

Stuart of course no stranger to writing either with more than 20 previous books to his name including his best selling autobiography "Twice Lucky"
Also one of the wittiest after dinner speakers you will ever hear.

Haynes have done manuals for the wartime Spitfire, the Lotus 72 grand Prix car a recent Red Bull GP car The Tornado steam locomotive and much else not normally associated with a workshop manual format

Stuart has taken it very seriously he tells me he has never done so much research for any book and is blessed with a fully qualified Geriatrician Doctor daughter.
But those of you who have witnessed Stuart in action with know this is certain to be a great read full of wit and humour and with illustrations by cartoonist Rod Waller,It is both a great read and a serious guide .

Gave this to my boss making fun of her age. Made her laugh. She actually read it though and she and her partner said it was really useful and genuinely thanked me for it. Detracted from the joke but it must be useful and readable as she is not the patient type.
