The main point I want to make about this book is how it prepares prospective greyhound owners, warts and all. I'm not sure everyone I meet when dog walking has gone through such a thorough process that Carol explains GRWE regularly applies, with the underlying concept that they are finding the right home and owner for each dog and not the other way around. How many people do you see who constantly complain about their pretty looking, but badly behaved dog ? Or rather poorly prepared owners who haven't thought through the responsibilities and implications of certain breeds. This should not be the case for any person reading this book and then going through GRWE's checking process.
I found chapter 2 on the background to a racing Greyhound's life very informative, good but boring for the dogs whilst racing but not so good when racing is over.
In answer to the question " Is a Greyhound for Me ?" it certainly is if you read this excellent book.
I only got this book yesterday (on my kindle). I'm really wanting to adopt a retired greyhound and have been doing loads of research (especially because I have 3 cats and need to know the risks and possibility of them living together in harmony!).
This book is everything I wanted, and more. It is easy to read, with a practical, positive and down to earth style. It's packed full of useful hints and tips for the prospective owner to help them help their dog settle quickly into a home life. It gives a dog's eye view of the world so that you know how they tick and can understand the training and behaviours you need to use with them to help you both. It also advises on the little specialities of greyhounds - it has made me want one even more (I didn't think that could be possible, but clearly it is!).
I've never owned a dog before, so the decision to get one is a big step. I now feel that I am as prepared as I can be, ready to take on the responsibility and armed with the right tools, hints and tips to help me make as good a job of it as I can.
The book covers food, illnesses, orientating a kennel dog to a home, games to play (I love this one so much, can't wait to put them into practice!), problem solving etc.
I certainly hope that, with the RGT's help, we can be matched to the right dog and provide them with lots of love in their forever home. Get this book if you're wanting to do the same.
