'No Rest' is arguably NMA's finest album, the most consistent, passionate work Justin Sullivan and the lads have released before or since. No Rest captures the righteous anger of the dispossessed, smalltown frustration and search for identity characteristic of their work, and spits it out in punchy, bass-heavy four minute gothic punk bites. From the opening lines of 'Frightened' sneering at the belief that 'the world outside your bolted door is evil', to the stark percussive lament to the death of the industrial North, 'No Greater Love', this paints as bleak a picture of Thatcher's Britain as you are likely to find. As a slice of musical history, as a snapshot of a band at their finest, and as an album which makes you want to cry AND revolt, I cannot recommend this album highly enough, particularly to Killing Joke and Joy Division fans (who probably have it already ;))

New Model Army don't get the credit they deserve. To many people, they are gloomy, earnest goths and no more. This is a pity as they are consummate songwriters with a consistent worldview and some surprisingly catchy tunes. No Rest For The Wicked is their second album and the one that brought them to a - marginally - wider audience. Well, it did give them a minor hit with "No Rest". They annoyed the Top Of The Pops people by insisting on playing it live and wearing t-shirts with "Only stupid bastards use heroin" on them. The parent album does not sound remotely like the cliched idea of an "80s record". It is stripped down, catchy, tuneful and fast paced. There's passion aplenty in songs like "No Rest" and "Better Than Them", but surprising humour in "Young Gifted And Skint" ("that's where it in't") and a palpable sense of old-fashioned decency in "Drag It Down". Best of all is "My Country" - a fine example of how to be patriotic without being a right-wing bigot. Still, if all this sounds a bit worthy, all these songs are set to galloping bass, danceable drums and hummable tunes. There is nothing dour about this stuff. Worth taking a chance on.

What can you say. New Model army at its best. A cd has taken me back to the grotty dives we entered to see these guys. Very few bands can get that right and still be that good over such a time scale. New Model Army do it with ease.
