Product description

About the Author

Cate Dean has been writing since she could hold a pen in her hand and put more than two words together on paper. She grew up losing herself in the wilds of fantasy worlds, and has had some of her own adventures while tromping through the UK, and a few other parts of the world. A lover of all things supernatural, she infuses that love into her stories, giving them a unique edge. When she's not writing, she loves cooking, scaring herself silly in the local cemeteries, and reading pretty much anything she can get her hands on.

There's a twist in this tale which makes it interesting, but it didn't come until so late in the story that I'm afraid I'd already decided the book was not for me, and the quirk wasn't strong enough to change that view, although it is extremely clever, and I can see why people would be prepared to buy a second episode.

The characters are rather predictable, with a secretive heroine, a witch with powers that she's not willing to learn to use properly, so that she leads others into danger, and a good cousing/bad cousin scenario, which has been overused elsewhere, and for that reason loses much of its effect in this tale. There are lots of incidents which keep the story moving, but I couldn't help but feel that they, and some of the minor characters, were all fairly routine conventions I'd seen in many plots before, and they just weren't enough to hold my interest. Note, too, it's only 150 pages long, including several pages of 'Claire Wiche Mythology' definitions.

It may be great fun for Young Adult readers, although I wasn't convinced of the need for the early 'hopping into bed' bit, which seemed to be there almost because it was a publisher's requirement at that stage in the book.

Absolutely fantastic. The story runs along at a cracking pace. The pov shifts between characters can be a bit disconcerting, but the blend of wicca and other, older, traditions is so fresh and original it's only a minor complaint. Thoroughly recommended.

If you like an angel and demons book this was a good read.
The characters were sound and the developing story through this and the following books extend the readers pleasure. You would need to read them in order, none would stand alone

I'm trying really hard to say something positive about this book but all I can come up with is that it was free and short... but the shortness resulted in unfinished storylines - although there were pages dedicated to absolutely nothing in the end so it wasn't a space but an organisational issue. The characters didn't feel fully fleshed out either, I can't say I understood, let alone identified with any of them. This book had a very strange rhythm from unnecessarily slow to confusingly quick and the resolution didn't feel cathartic at all.
I hate to give 1 star for something that a writer was brave enough to publish but this really wasn't ready for publishing in my opinion.

I really connected with the writer and book in a big way. At times I felt that I knew what they were all going through.
I will enjoy reading all the other books in this collection.
