I'm loathe to criticise anyone who takes the time to write a book to share their knowledge and expertise with others—and this author obviously knows her stuff—but I found this book boring and hard work ... it was a real slog. To be fair to the author most of the blame for this book's failings must lie with the designers and editors.

The book has many faults:

It's hard to read. The font for the code examples is just too small; perhaps as an attempt to fit the book into fewer pages ("HTML and CSS in 24 Hours" uses 445 pages for its 24 chapters while "Responsive Web Design in 24 Hours" has only 373).

The code examples are not syntax highlighted ... Why? It's a colour book. Anyone who has ever used a code editor with syntax highlighting will know what a boon to productivity it is. One of the best features of "HTML and CSS in 24 Hours", and something that set it apart from most other web design books, was the syntax highlighted code. Using plain text for code is a step backward by SAMS.

There is some online content to compliment the book but it's in the form of Downloadable Content (DLC), a rapacious trend pioneered by the games industry. SAMS gouges you for another $10, making the total cost of the book $50; which seems pretty poor value. If this is the new business model for the "... in 24 Hours" books I don't think I'll be buying any more.

The "... in 24 Hours" format is a bit gimmicky. It was probably difficult to squeeze a subject like RWD into 24 chapters so many of the topics feel like they've been skimped on. With other books in this series I've sometimes felt that the odd chapter was a bit rushed in order to fit the hour-per-chapter template.

4.0 out of 5 stars Just the ticket for an amateur like me 2 Oct. 2015
By Tra Manfrank - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback Verified Purchase
I am an amateur in this field and this book was just the ticket. It contains an intro section of a few chapters which were historical and which was ok, but I could have skipped it. Usually I am a "get to the good stuff person" but I read the intro stuff anyway. The book takes the reader through a chapter by chapter sequence of developing a web site for multiple size screens. Since I am analytical it was good for me.

I really liked the chapter on font size. It can be quite complicated and the author explains her process for adjustable fonts.

The editor made quite a few errors and a took a little thinking to figure out what was really supposed to be in some of the examples. All in all, I would recommend it, especially for a newbie like me. For those not familiar with these books, each chapter is to take an hour to read and practice.

2.0 out of 5 stars Not what I expect from a Sams TY 24 hour book 31 Aug. 2015
By peg2 - Published on Amazon.com

This book isn't as good as it should have been. It's okay, I guess, but it would have been much better if it followed the format of a number of other TY24 books. That is, the author should have designed a sample site, and had exercises, with downloadable starting points. While there is a sort of a sample web site, the book is more the sort of thing you'd get from a lecture-demo setup.

This book isn't a complete failure; I just think it could have been a lot better. My suggestion is to start somewhere else for your RWD training.

5.0 out of 5 stars Breaks Down Learning About and Creating a Responsive Site into Small, Understandable Chunks 9 April 2015
By Shelley Elmblad - Published on Amazon.com
Format: Paperback
Having a grasp of general web design, I was looking for a way to quickly learn more about responsive design. Responsive Web Design in 24 Hours breaks learning about RWD and creating a responsive site down into small chunks of time vs. one expansive lesson after another. This book makes creating a responsive site that looks great on all devices do-able, especially when your project list is already quite full.
